Alabama Rare Bird Report – Wednesday, June 17, 2009.
WOOD STORKS are now being seen in many locations around Alabama’s Coastal
Plain. On 6/12, a nice count of 265 was seen along AL 25 between Faunsdale and
Sledge in Hale County. [DeAL 42-B/C5] On 6/13 several dozen were
found along AL 5 north of Safford around 3.5 south of US 80. [DeAL 43-D7]
BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING-DUCKS continue to be present at Blakeley Island in
Mobile. Two of the pink-billed beauties were seen 6/13 in pond #4. A GLOSSY
IBIS was south of pond 4 in the large ditch partially filled with water.
REMEMBER: this is an access-restricted area and an annual, signed, hold
harmless permit is required to be in the possession of State Docks security
personnel prior to making your visit. A pre-visit notification phone call to
security personnel is also required. These rules have been established in
order to maintain access to this productive birding area and must be followed to
the letter. For full details, a map of the area, and copies of the r
