Alabama Rare Bird Report – Monday, December 14, 2009.

A BURROWING OWL, the first documented in Alabama since 1991, was discovered
12/12 on Dauphin Island near the golf course club house complex. The bird was
seen again 12/13 but I’ve seen no search reports from today. The location was
west of the club house in the general direction of the pier. The owl was found
in the dune field and low grassland area and generally hid in or near tufts of
grass or debris. It may favor the area closer to the clubhouse where some storm
debris is piled. A careful search of the area should be rewarded but this owl
may easily be overlooked as it does not seem to be in the habit of making itself
obvious. Please be mindful of both bird and habitat disturbance if you search
here. The owl has been well-documented with photos and multiple observations.
Updates on results of searches is desired. A WESTERN TANAGER was found 12/5 at
the Shell Mound park near the (split) Bee Tree feeding on cedar berries. A
WESTERN KINGBIRD was also seen 12/5-12/6 behind Ft. Gaines where one was also
present in mid-November. An immature GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL was found 12/6 on
Pelican Peninsula (south of the island pier). A probable "CHANDELEUR” GULL
(KELP x HERRING) was seen again 12/8 also on the peninsula. [DeAL 64-B3][BGtA
p. 6-12]

A dead FLAMMULATED OWL was found 12/10 on a private porch in Waverly (Lee
County) northwest of Opelika. If accepted this would be only our 2nd state
record.

A 1st winter THAYER’S GULL was reported again 12/7 on the pilings at the
southeast end of the US 431 bridge north of Gunterville (Marshall County).
[DeAL 26-A1; 25-A&B10][BGtA p. 258-259][NABT #35]

The book on Alabama NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL banding opened another chapter 12/6
when a capture was made at a new site in Hollins (Clay County) around 40 miles
southeast of the Clay (Jefferson County) hot spot.
