Alabama Rare Bird Report – Monday, December 28, 2009.
The BURROWING OWL discovered 12/12 on Dauphin Island near the golf course club
house complex continued to be seen through at least 12/22. One area the owl
seems to be found in repeatedly is 100-200 yards southwest of the building in
the general vicinity of a USGS marker, a washed-up telephone phone (rusty
attachments), pieces of dock or decking, and a small pine tree with a nearby bug
trap. Updates on results of searches is desired. A vivid-yellow WESTERN
TANAGER was seem 12/19 in the pines and popcorn trees along Omega Street on the
way out to the airport. This may have been a different bird than the one seen
12/5 at the Shell Mound park . A GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen again 12/17
on Pelican Peninsula (south of the island pier). [DeAL 64-B3][BGtA p. 6-12]
Two WESTERN KINGBIRDS were seen 12/22 at Fort Morgan. [DeAL 64-B4][BGtA p.
23][ACBT #15]
Six WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS were seen 12/17 in the surf just south of the AL 59 and
AL 182 intersection in Gulf Shores. [DeAL 64-F3]
A 2nd cycle GLAUCOUS GULL was found 12/16 in Guntersville and has continued
through at least 12/26 on and near the pilings at the southeast end of the US
431 bridge north of Gunterville (Marshall County). An adult CALIFORNIA GULL was
reported again 12/16 at the pilings but I’ve seen no subsequent reports of
it. A surprising number of EARED GREBES have been seen this winter in the
grebe/duck raft usually nearshore along Sunset Drive just north of the water
treatment plant. On 12/26 seven (7) were counted! A PACIFIC LOON was seen
12/20 south of AL 69 in Browns Creek. [DeAL 26-A1; 25-A&B10][BGtA p.
258-259][NABT #35]
Two WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS have apparently been in the general vicinity of
Limestone Bay on Wheeler NWR since late November. On 12/19 one or both were
seen at Penny Bottoms at the southeast end of the bay. In November the ducks
were seen mixed with the Snow Goose flock that frequents the bay itself. [DeAL
18-F5&G4][BGtA p. 240-244][NABT #23&24]
