Alabama Rare Bird Report – Friday, January 8, 2010.

The BURROWING OWL discovered 12/12 on Dauphin Island near the golf course club
house complex continued to be seen through at least 1/3. One area the owl seems
to be found in repeatedly is 100-200 yards southwest of the building in the
general vicinity of a USGS marker, a washed-up telephone phone (rusty
attachments), pieces of dock or decking, and a small pine tree with a nearby bug
trap. Updates on results of searches is desired. [DeAL 64-B3][BGtA p. 6-12]

Two WESTERN KINGBIRDS were seen again at Fort Morgan 1/1. [DeAL 64-B4][BGtA p.
23][ACBT #15]

A FRANKLIN’s and an apparent KUMLIEN’S (ICELAND) GULL were seen 12/31-1/1 at
the Magnolia Springs landfill in Baldwin County These birds were not refound
1/4, however, a 1st cycle GLAUCOUS GULL was! The landfill hours are currently
7 am – 4 pm, Mon-Fri and 7 am-12:00 Sat. To bird inside the landfill, park
near the Coastal Birding Trail sign on the right side of the scale house (not on
the scale!) and go inside to ask permission to bird and receive latest
directions. The basic directions this season are to drive straight ahead past
the scale and continue straight at the T-intersection up the hill to the viewing
area on top of the berm. Pull your vehicle well out of the way of the truck
road to the left on the graveled parking area. The observation platform is a
short distance to the east across a gravel path. Confine your birding to this
location – do not explore. DO NOT approach the workers or equipment and if
heavy equipment approaches you, move and DO NOT block the way. Another
(sometimes better) view may be obtained from the south border road by turning
right at the T-intersection after leaving the scale house and then left at the
corner. Around mid way down this road section is where the active dumping is
taking place and a good view of the bathing pond is found. Park on the shoulder
out-of-the-way of traffic but be sure not to get stuck in wet mud which can be
present. [DeAL 63-G7][BGtA p. 37][ACBT #19]

Around 142 species were reported at the Gulf Shores CBC compilation 1/2.
Notable finds included a 1st cycle GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL on the beach across
from Gulf SP Road 2 [DeAL 64-F3]; both RED-THROATED and PACIFIC LOONS in the
Perdido Pass channel [DeAL 64-E4]; 2 female COMMON MERGANSERS at mouth of Bon
Secour River as seen from south end of Blue Heron Lane southwest of Bon Secour
[DeAL 64-E2]; and a WESTERN KINGBIRD near Grantham Road just south of County 26
(Michigan) west of Foley [DeAL 63-H7].

Around 111 species were totaled during the Montgomery CBC on 1/2. Unusual finds
included a VERMILION FLYCATCHER (on private land) and a male WESTERN TANAGER at
Cooters Pond Park in Elmore County [DeAL 45-D7] in trees between the silo and
restroom near the boat launch. The tanager was refound on 1/3 but was not seen
on 1/4 or 1/5.

A young, male CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD was banded 1/6 at a home in Indian Springs
just south of Hoover (Shelby County). Visitors are welcome. The address is 131
Auburn Road. The phone for Jennie Lusk is 205/988-0299 but there is no need to
call before you try for this bird. Park on the road beside but don’t block
the driveway. Walk down the drive to view the back corner of the house where
the feeder is hanging. Please be on your best birding behavior at this private
residence. [DeAL 31-G6]
