Alabama Rare Bird Report – Saturday, March 26, 2011.
The Baldwin County CRESTED CARACARA discovered 2/10 continued to be seen
sporadically through 3/15. Remember, DO NOT drive into the sod farm property
and be sensitive of home owners when searching their neighborhoods for this
rarity. [DeAL 63-H7]

The Baldwin County MOUNTAIN PLOVER at Riverview Turf south of Magnolia Springs
during the last two months, was seen again 3/14-15. The location that day was
south of the large, solitary oak adjacent to Bay Road about 1.3 miles west of
County 49. REMEMBER, THE SOD FARM IS PRIVATE PROPERTY AND BIRDERS DO NOT HAVE
PERMISSION TO ENTER. LOOK ONLY FROM THE PUBLIC ROADS SURROUNDING THIS TURF
AREA: BAY ROAD, COUNTY 12, AND COUNTY 49. [DeAL 63-H7]
The Lake Mitchell WESTERN GREBE (east of Clanton) was last reported seen 3/8 but
may still be present (I’ve seen no negative search reports). Birders are
welcome to come and view from the original finder’s property adjacent to the
lake. Directions: To reach the area go east about 10 miles on CR 28 (L.
Mitchell Road) from the I-65 Clanton exit (#208). Near the public boat ramp
(Higgins Ferry Park) the large paved road ends at a stop sign and a smaller
paved road continues straight. In about 1/2 block turn left on CR 712. The house
is the 4th on the left (#195, "Dodson" on mailbox). It's OK to walk around the
fence and go to the shore; permission not needed. The boat launch would provide
additional lake access. [DeAL 38-F1]
A singing meadowlark found at Lakeland Farms southwest of Marion in Perry County
3/12 responded actively to a recording of WESTERN MEADOWLARK. The bird was
seen in-flight but could not be relocated for detailed observations. The
location was near the last pond at the southern end of the farm before the exit.
