Welcome to the Arkansas Rare Bird Alert for September 18, 2008, sponsored by the
Audubon Society of Central Arkansas (ASCA). ASCA meets at 6:30 pm the second
Thursday of each month at the Roosevelt Thompson Library, 38 Rahling Circle, LR,
phone 501-821-3060. Rahling Circle is located at the northeast corner of Chenal
Parkway and Rahling Road (entry from Rahling Road). Rahling Circle is U- shaped
rather than a circle, with the open end of the 'U' on Rahling Road. The library
will be open during our meeting in the 'program room'. This meeting will begin
at 6:30 p.m. and end at 8 p.m.
From around the state recent sightings are:
Two Caspian Terns are on Lake Langhofer in Pine Bluff in Jefferson County.
Three Caspian Terns are at Centerton Fish Hatchery and at Lake Fayetteville in
Northwest Arkansas and a Common Tern was also recently photographed there.
An immature Black Skimmer was on a sandbar in the Arkansas River 2 miles
downstream of the David D. Terry Lock and Dam, southeast of Little Rock. The
Skimmer was with about 20 Caspian Terns and 3 American Avocets.
An immature LITTLE GULL was identified on Lake Dardanelle east and north of
Delaware Recreation Area. It was associating with a large group of Black Terns.
It was observed in direct comparison with Ring-billed Gull, Laughing Gull, and
SABINE'S GULL.
From the observation deck at Beard's Bluff on Lake Millwood, Laughing Gulls and
Sabine's Gull have been observed. The Sabine's was an adult still in breeding
plumage. An apparent female RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD was among the mass of (at least)
40 Ruby-thoated
Hummingbirds swarming like bees around the feeder at the campground check-in
station.
An Inca Dove has been seen in the last few weeks in Hot Springs Village.
A juvenile plumaged RED KNOT was spotted at Treadway's Minnow Farms. It was in
the drained pond in the back across the street from the hatchery. There was also
juvenile Sanderling there. too.
At Bald Knob NWR, 13 Wood Storks, 8 Buff-breasted Sandpipers and one American
Avocet were observed.
A juvenile Sanderling was see at Treadway’s Minnow Farm and 3 WHITE-FACED IBIS
were at Saul's Fish Farm in east central Arkansas.
Be sure to watch for accidentals driven north by Hurricane Ike!
