This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for Thursday, June 11.
A BRANT was at Lake Balboa in Van Nuys through June 10. It has been seen on the
lake and also feeding on the grass.
An adult LITTLE BLUE HERON is being seen regularly at Del Rey Lagoon and was
reported through June 10. Reports indicate that it has been in the area since
at least May 31. Del Rey Lagoon is east of Pacific Ave. south of the Ballona
channel. The bird was also reported at Ballona Lagoon (off Pacific, north of
the Ballona channel), but most sightings have been from Del Rey Lagoon. The
heron is roosting at the egret roost and rookery at Admiralty Park (Yvonne Burke
Park) and so may be seen there late in the day. This park is on Admiralty Way
across from the Ritz Carlton in Marina del Rey.
A RED-EYED VIREO was found in the Sepulveda Basin on June 10. The specific
location is by the east shore of Lake Balboa near the lifeguard station. The
bird was singing and seen in the trees along the fence that borders the golf
course.
A NORTHERN PARULA that was at the Village Green Condominiums from May 27-31 was
replaced by second bird from June 6-11. The bird has been seen at several
locations on the property. The condos are on the south side of Rodeo Road at
Cloverdale. This is private property but birders are welcome. Please be
thoughtful of the residents so that this privilege continues.
Adding to the growing list was another NORTHERN PARULA found in Zuma Canyon on
June 6. This bird was along the upper part of Bonsall Drive (off the Pacific
Coast Highway) where it crosses the creek.
Also in Zuma Canyon was an adult male ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK. This bird was in
sycamores east of the dirt portion of Bonsall just before the dirt parking area
at the end.
This report is sponsored by the Los Angeles Audubon Society.
