This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for Thursday, June 25.

The adult LITTLE BLUE HERON at Del Rey Lagoon was reported through June 21. Del
Rey Lagoon is east of Pacific Ave. south of the Ballona channel. The heron has
been roosting at the egret roost and rookery at Admiralty Park (Yvonne Burke
Park) and so may be seen there late in the day. The park is on Admiralty Way
across from the Ritz Carlton in Marina del Rey.

A WHIP-POOR-WILL was found along the Angeles Crest Highway on June 20. The bird
was at mile post 67.44. It was well downslope from the road so listen
carefully. Please do not use recordings.

A “Southwestern” WILLOW FLYCATCHER (subspecies extimus) has been at Hansen Dam
from June 13-21. The bird is near the north shore of the main lake around a
single large eucalyptus east of the lower soccer fields. A NORTHERN PARULA was
also at this location on June 21.

A PLUMBEOUS VIREO was at Big Rock Creek on the north slope of the San Gabriels
on June 20. The bird was just upstream from Big Rock Campground. This
species has been confirmed as breeding here in the past and this is the only
known location in LA County where both Plumbeous and Cassin’s Vireo’s breed.

A YELLOW-THROATED VIREO was at Peck Pit (Peck Road Water Conservation Park) in
Arcadia on June 21 and 22. The bird was in vicinity of the picnic area just
west of the parking lot and very vocal. To reach Peck Pit, take Myrtle Ave.
south from the 210 Freeway. After Myrtle becomes Peck Road watch for the park
on your right.

A RED-EYED VIREO was seen in Big Tujunga Canyon on June 22. The bird was near
Camp #15. Take Oro Vista from Foothill to Big Tujunga Canyon Road. Camp #15 is
along this road after you pass the baseball fields and road construction area.
 Bird from the road only.

The male NORTHERN PARULA at the Village Green Condominiums was seen through June
 25. Also present on the 25th was a TENNESSEE WARBLER and a second (female)
NORTHERN PARULA. The bottlebrush on the north side of the walkway joining the
two lawn areas is a good starting point when looking for these birds. The
condos are on the south side of Rodeo Road at Cloverdale. This is private
property but birders are welcome. Please be thoughtful of the residents so that
 this privilege continues.

An AMERICAN REDSTART was at the Ballona Freshwater Marsh near Playa del Rey on
June 22. It was seen along the Jefferson arm of the marsh.

A male BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER continued at Eaton Canyon in Pasadena through
June 23. The bird was north of the bridge at the north end of the main canyon,
about one third of the way from the bridge to the waterfall. There is some blue
graffiti (“TATUM Ruh”) on the right side of the canyon and the bird has been
seen and heard just beyond this spot.
