This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for Thursday, July 2.
The adult LITTLE BLUE HERON at Del Rey Lagoon was reported through June 27. Del
Rey Lagoon is east of Pacific Ave. south of the Ballona channel. The heron has
been spending the night at the egret roost at Yvonne Burke Park (formerly
Admiralty Park) and thus may be seen there late in the day. The park is on
Admiralty Way across from the Ritz Carlton in Marina del Rey.
Seabird watching was good from Leo Carillo State Beach north of Malibu on June
27, with eight CASSIN’S AUKLETS, two RHINOCEROS AUKLETS and a PIGEON GUILLEMOT.
The WHIP-POOR-WILL along the Angeles Crest Highway was reported through June 27.
The bird is at mile post 67.44. It is well downslope from the road so listen
carefully. On the 27th, the bird started calling just before 9:00pm and had
stopped by 9:15. Please do not use recordings to get this bird to call.
A BLACK SWIFT was near Claremont on June 28. This bird was seen very late in
the day from Cotal Canyon Road, accessed from the parking lot at 4301 Mills
Avenue.
A YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO was along the Rio Hondo near South El Monte on June 28.
From the Bosque del Rio Hondo park, walk north along the east side of the
river-- the bird was in the thick cottonwood riparian growth about halfway
between San Gabriel Blvd. and the 60 Freeway.
A WHITE-EYED VIREO was found in Long Beach on July 2. The bird was at DeForest
Park along the LA River. Go to the south end of DeForest Ave. and enter through
the south entrance of the Nature Trail portion of the park. The bird was just
north of here near a wet area and was not vocalizing at the time.
Two NORTHERN PARULAS continued at the Village Green Condominiums in Los Angeles
through June 27. The birds move around the area—check the several flowering
bottlebrushes around the coral tree (at the north side of the central lawn area)
and the bottlebrush 100 meters east of the coral tree. The condos are on the
south side of Rodeo Road at Cloverdale. This is private property but birders
are welcome. Please be thoughtful of the residents so that access can continue.
Another NORTHERN PARULA was in Zuma Canyon on June 27. This bird was in
sycamores on the north side of Rainsford about 50 meters east of the stream
crossing. The same or a second parula was heard about 200 meters before the end
of the paved road in the canyon.
One and possibly two SUMMER TANAGERS were in Soledad Canyon near Santa Clarita
on July 1. One bird was heard in the stretch between Crown Valley Road and Agua
Dulce Canyon Road. The specific location was about one mile downstream from
the USFS Soledad Campground. Almost all areas off the road are private
property—please bird these areas only if you have obtained permission.
Remarkable for this location were at least two RED-BREASTED SAPSUCKERS-- an
adult and juvenile-- near the Rio Store along Soledad Canyon Road.
This report is sponsored by the Los Angeles Audubon Society.
