This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for Thursday, February 18. 
 
Six GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE, an “ALEUTIAN” CACKLING GOOSE and a SNOW GOOSE
continue at Earvin Magic Johnson Recreation Area in Willowbrook.
 
Two BRANT were near the south jetty at Marina del Rey on February 18.  Access is
 from the north end of Pacific Ave. on the south side of the Ballona Creek
channel.
 
An immature male LONG-TAILED DUCK continued through February 12 off Santa Monica
 Beach.  It has been between lifeguard tower #10 and #11.  Also present here
were five BLACK SCOTERS and eight WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS.
 
The FERRUGINOUS HAWK continues near Playa del Rey.  It can often be seen in the
large Cypress Tree or on the utility poles west of Pershing and south of
Waterview.  Also check the poles along Vista del Mar.
 
A LEWIS’S WOODPECKER was at the corner of Sierra Madre and Santa Anita in
Arcadia on February 17.  It was on a phone pole on the northeast corner of the
intersection.
 
The WILLIAMSON’S SAPSUCKER continues at Veteran’s Park in Sylmar.  It was last
seen on February 17 at the usual location in the trees below lamp post #20.
 
A RED-NAPED SAPSUCKER was at North Hollywood Park on February 13.  It was about
100 meters southwest of the intersection of Magnolia and Tujunga.
 
The GRAY FLYCATCHER at Augustus Hawkins Natural Park in Los Angeles continued.
It was stil present along the south and west edges of the wetland area on
February 16.
 
The DUSKY-CAPPED FLYCATCHER continues at Creek Park in La Mirada.  It was last
reported in eucalyptus trees on the hill on February 16.  This bird has been
missed many times and is not always easy to find.
 
Scarce on the coastal slope was a LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE at an ususual location on
February 14 and 15.  It was by the rectangular pools just inside the LA County
Arboretum entrance in Arcadia.  A CACKLING GOOSE continues at the Arboretum by
the lake.
 
Several MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRDS continue on the south side of Brackett Field in La
Verne.  Access is at the west end of McKinley, west of Fairplex Drive.
Continuing along the road on foot west of the gate will take you along the
southern border of the airfield.
 
A male SUMMER TANAGER continues at the Los Angeles National Cemetery along the
east side fence usually near the “T” intersection of cemetery roads Antietam and
 Appomatox.
 
A GRASSHOPPER SPARROW was found in the Santa Monica Mountains on February 14.
To reach the location, take Decker Canyon Road inland from PCH to Decker School
Road.  Make a left turn here and continue about one mile.  Watch for the Malibu
Spring Trail sign and follow this trail 75-100 meters into the grassy meadow.
This is where the bird was seen.
 
 
VENTURA COUNTY—
 
A BALD EAGLE was seen at Lake Casitas on February 13.
 
A SUMMER TANAGER was seen near Camino Real Park in Ventura on February 13.  It
was in the green belt on the barranca side of Aurora Drive across from the
mobile home park.
