This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for Thursday, February 24.
Two CACKLING GEESE were at Hahamongna Watershed Park (aka Devil’s Gate Basin) in
Pasadena on February 19. They were seen only briefly in the new pond east of
the lower parking area.
A EURASIAN WIGEON continues along the Los Angeles River near the Bette Davis
Picnic Area in Glendale. The picnic area is at the corner of Victory and
Riverside and access to the river can be had from either side of the park.
Off Dockweiler State Beach in El Segundo, several BLACK SCOTERS and WHITE-WINGED
SCOTERS continue. They are typically in the vicinity of lifeguard tower #49 to
#54. Parking can be had along Vista del Mar.
Elsewhere, at least one BLACK SCOTER and three WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS continued
off Santa Monica Beach on February 23.
Adding to the list of inland BROWN PELICANS was one at the Japanese Garden in
the Sepulveda Basin on February 20.
The male WILLIAMSON’S SAPSUCKER at Veteran’s Park in Sylmar continues in the
vicinity of lamp post #20. The immature YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER continues here
as well. It was last seen near the playground on February 21. A HAIRY
WOODPECKER was seen at the park on February 21 and 22.
A presumably continuing HAMMOND’S FLYCATCHER was at Solano Canyon in Elysian
Park on February 18.
A PAINTED REDSTART continues at Loyola Marymount University in Westchester. It
has been in the carob tree and in pines near the chapel bell tower. Weekday
parking on campus can be a problem. Parking lot H is the closest on campus lot,
or one can park off campus on West 80th Street near Loyola Blvd and walk north
to the bell tower.
A SUMMER TANAGER continues at Ed Vincent Park in Inglewood. It has usually been
in the northeast corner of the park.
A female or immature male BALTIMORE ORIOLE was found at the Los Angeles National
Cemetery on February 21. It was seen in the area near the pointed gray stone
monument at the north end. There has also been a male BALTIMORE ORIOLE at the
cemetery, but it has not been reported recently.
VENTURA COUNTY—
A BLACK VULTURE was seen over the Ojai Meadows area on February 22 and is
apparently roosting in this area.
A wintering SAGE THRASHER continues at the end of Casper Road on the Oxnard
Plain. It was last seen on February 20.
This report is sponsored by the Los Angeles Audubon Society.
