This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for Thursday, March 11.
A few BLACK SCOTERS (2) and WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS (7) continue off Dockweiler
State Beach in El Segundo and off Santa Monica Beach. The mix of scoters
changes frequently. The birds have been in the Surf Scoter flock anywhere
between Imperial Highway and Lifeguard tower #47.
A YELLOW-BILLED LOON was at Castaic Lagoon from March 8-11 and is likely still
present. It was generally best seen from the fishing dock near the boat launch
on the east side of the lagoon. There is an $11 entrance fee at this location.
Several GREATER SCAUP and HORNED GREBES were also present.
An adult BALD EAGLE continues to be seen at Bonelli Park in San Dimas. It was
joined by an immature BALD EAGLE on March 8.
SWAINSON’S HAWKS continue to move through the area with several reports of
single birds and small flocks this past week.
The YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER continues at Lindberg Park in Culver City. It is
regular opposite 10963 Ocean Drive.
A WILLIAMSON’S SAPSUCKER and a HAIRY WOODPECKER continue at Veteran’s Park in
Sylmar. Both were last reported on March 6.
A GRAY FLYCATCHER continues at Augustus Hawkins Natural Area in Los Angeles.
Look along the south and west edges of the wetland area. Another GRAY
FLYCATCHER continues at Bonelli Park in San Dimas. Go east on the north
entrance road past the parking area turn off to the stop sign. The bird has
been in the area to your left between the stop sign and the road that heads
left.
The DUSKY-CAPPED FLYCATCHER at Creek Park in La Mirada was seen through March 6.
Try looking and listening for it in the eucalyptus on the hill. It can be
easy to miss.
An ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER was at the Jim Gillian Recreation Center in Baldwin
Hills on March 9. This is likely a bird that wintered locally.
MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRDS are still being seen at Brackett Field in La Verne. The
latest report was of five on the southwest corner of the airfield, accessed from
McKinley.
The PAINTED REDSTART continues at Loyola Marymount University. You can enter
the campus from the Lincoln side as parking on campus is problematic. Look for
the bird in the trees around the bell tower.
The female SUMMER TANAGER continues at Ed Vincent Park in Inglewood, being last
seen in the northeast corner of the park. Another SUMMER TANAGER, this one a
male, was at Oak Park Cemetery in Claremont on March 7.
The PINK-SIDED JUNCO in Elysian Park was refound on March 11. This bird is in
the Solano Canyon area and was seen north of the northernmost playground.
The COMMON GRACKLE at El Dorado Park in Long Beach was still present on March 7.
It was by the second bridge (past Snake Road) after entering the park on the
north side of Spring Street.
VENTURA COUNTY—
A PINK-SIDED JUNCO continued at Rancho Simi Community Park through March 12. It
was last reported in conifers near the lake.
This report is sponsored by the Los Angeles Audubon Society.
