This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for Thursday, March 18.
A few BLACK SCOTERS and WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS continued off Dockweiler State
Beach in El Segundo. The mix of scoters here changes frequently. The birds
have been in the large Surf Scoter flock anywhere between Imperial Highway and
Lifeguard tower #47.
The YELLOW-BILLED LOON was reported at Castaic Lagoon through March 16. It has
generally been seen on the southern part of the lagoon and visible either from
the east side fishing dock or from the west side where walking along the shore
is possible. There is an $11 entrance fee at this location. Also seen here on
March 16 was a female/immature RED-BREASTED MERGANSER.
A sub adult BALD EAGLE continues at Bonelli Park in San Dimas. It was last
reported on March 13. There were no reports of the adult at this location last
week. An adult BALD EAGLE was seen at Elizabeth Lake on March 13.
The YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER continues at Lindberg Park in Culver City. It is
regular in a camphor tree opposite 10963 Ocean Drive.
A RED-NAPED SAPSUCKER continues at the Village Green Condominiums near unit
#5554. Check around this area which is in the southwest part of the complex.
These condos are southwest of LaBrea and Rodeo Road.
MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRDS are still being seen at Brackett Field in La Verne. The
latest report was from the north side of the field along Puddingstone Drive.
The female SUMMER TANAGER continues at Ed Vincent Park in Inglewood, being last
seen in the northeast corner of the park on March 14. Another SUMMER TANAGER,
this one a male, continued at Oak Park Cemetery in Claremont through March 16.
A GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE was found at Culver City Park on March 13.
The adult male BALTIMORE ORIOLE was seen through March 12 at Los Angeles
National Cemetery in Westwood. Check along the east fence near the intersection
of cemetery roads Appomattox and Antietam.
VENTURA COUNTY—
On March 15, there were four LEWIS’S WOODPECKERS in dead sycamores along Santa
Ana Road north of Lake Casitas. Overhead nearby was a ZONE-TAILED HAWK.

the pepper trees on the left side of the road next to a fallen tree. A LEWIS’S
