This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for Thursday, August 12.
An apparent juvenile YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was found at Malibu Lagoon on
August 4 and reported through August 8. There is some debate as to whether this
is a pure bird or one of mixed night-heron parentage. It was reported near the
second footbridge along the path leading from the parking area to the beach.
SOLITARY SANDPIPERS were found along the LA River on August 8 between Alondra
and Somerset, and at the Rosecrans Ave. pipe bridge on August 10. Another was
at the Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB from August 8-11. As always, a letter of
permission is required to enter the base.
Single SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS were at Malibu Lagoon from August 7-8 and along
the lower LA River near the Metro Blue Line crossing on August 7. Elsewhere,
one was at Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB on August 7, with two there on August 11.
These last two birds were at the Duck Unlimited Ponds.
A BAIRD’S SANDPIPER, the first reported this fall, was at Piute Ponds on August
11.
