This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for Thursday, September 2.
An apparent immature YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was seen and photographed at
Balboa Lake in Van Nuys on August 26. Further documentation is desirable.
Entrance is on the east side of Balboa Ave. north of the 101 Freeway.
A BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER was along the lower LA River from August 28-30. It
was seen from south the Metro Blue Line crossing (which is below Del Amo) to
north of Del Amo.
A few SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, BAIRD’S SANDPIPERS, PECTORAL SANDPIPERS and
SOLITARY SANDPIPERS continue to be reported along the lower LA River. Check the
river near the following street crossings—Alondra, Somerset, Willow, Wardlow,
Del Amo and Rosecrans.
A BLACK TERN was seen north of the Del Amo crossing on August 29.
At Malibu Lagoon a WHITE-WINGED DOVE was seen on August 29 near the first
bridge. Continuing here also through August 29 was a YELLOW-CROWNED X
BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON.
Several LESSER NIGHTHAWKS have also been foraging over Malibu Lagoon in the
evening recently, being last seen on August 30.
A PLUMBEOUS VIREO continued at Legg Lake in South El Monte through August 29.
It was still singing at the northeast side of north Legg Lake at that time.
An INDIGO BUNTING was along the San Gabriel River in Pico Rivera on August 28.
It was on the east side of the river north of Whittier Blvd.
Also seen near here between Whittier and Washington Blvd. have been one or more
SOLITARY SANDPIPERS and two PECTORAL SANDPIPERS as recently as August 31. These
sandpipers in the riverbed were adjacent to Dunlap Crossing. Three female
YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDS were also present on August 31.
VENTURA COUNTY—
A PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER continued through August 29 at the sod fields along
Arnold Road on the Oxnard Plain. Five BAIRD’S SANDPIPERS were also seen here.
Try looking in the last few fields on the north side of the road as you head
west.
A WHITE-WINGED DOVE continued at the end of Arnold Road, being reported through
August 31.
One to two SOLITARY SANDPIPERS continued at McGrath State Beach near the day use
parking area.
This report is sponsored by the Los Angeles Audubon Society.
