This is a summary of reports from the Northwestern
California Bird Alert , sponsored by the City of Arcata, Redwood
Region
Audubon Society, and generous support from local birders. Most
birds reported are in Humboldt County unless otherwise noted.
Birds in caps under the "birds mentioned" section have less than 50
(plus
or minus 5) records of occurrence in Northwestern California as
defined in Stan Harris's " Northwestern California Birds" (3rd
edition, 2005). California Bird Records Committee review species
are noted with an asterisk (*). Send reports of California Bird

The juvenile BAR-TAILED GODWIT continued and was seen from various vantage
points along the Mad River Estuary, from Hiller Park to Murray Road, in
McKinleyville. At least one BAIRD'S SANDPIPER was present along the estuary
also (Ken Burton, Daryl Coldren).
A 1st fall female BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER was seen in a large chickadee/warbler
flock in the large willow patch just to the south of the Vigo Street
extension at the Eureka Marsh (Tom Leskiw).
1 Sept.
------------
A BLUE-HEADED* and a RED-EYED VIREO was found at the Orick Dump (Ken Erwin).
The BLUE-HEADED VIREO was refound later in the day (Daryl Coldren, Lauren
Tompkins, Ben Zyla).
The juvenile BAR-TAILED GODWIT was still present on the Mad River Estuary
and seen from the School Road, Hiller Park and Murray Road access points at
various times in the day (Chet Ogan, Rob Fowler).
In addition to the godwit of interest, a continuing juvenile male RUFF was
seen flying by the School Road area along the Mad River Estuary (Rob
Fowler).
A male AMERICAN REDSTART was seen at Mad River County Park, probably the
same seen on 26 August (Daryl Coldren, Lauren Tompkins, Ben Zyla).
A WILLOW FLYCATCHER was seen at Mt. Trashmore at the Arcata Marsh. The
observer also reported hearing calls only once of a possible PYGMY NUTHATCH
in the pines running north and south at the west side of Mt. Trashmore, but
couldn't confirm it (David Fix).
A probable female BALTIMORE ORIOLE was seen briefly and described in the
Salt River riparia in the Ferndale Bottoms. A WESTERN KINGBIRD was off of
Hookton Road and 1 WILLOW FLYCATCHER was along Eel River Drive between
Loleta and Fernbridge (Sean McAllister).
A NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was in the Horse Pasture Willows on the North Spit of
Humboldt Bay (Scott Carey).
2 Sept.
------------
The juvenile BAR-TAILED GODWIT continued along the Mad River Estuary, near
the mouth of the Mad River (Jim & Sheree Lomax fide Rob Fowler).
In DEL NORTE COUNTY 2 STILT SANDPIPERS were still present at the Alexandre
Dairy in the Smith River Bottoms (Ron LeValley).
A first-of-fall AMERICAN PIPIT was reported from the Little River Estuary
(Scott Carey).
A BLUE-HEADED VIREO and an eastern "gilvus" WARBLING VIREO were highlights
in the "Oxbow Patch" near the Redwood Creek Mouth and a WILLOW FLYCATCHER
was on the levee (Ken Irwin).
A WILLOW FLYCATCHER was present at private residence in Arcata (Rob Fowler).
3 Sept.
------------
NOTE: The following reports were mostly from the Labor Day Bird Round Up.
A WILSON'S PHALAROPE was seen in the slough that crosses the V Street Loop
in the Arcata Bottoms (Gary Bloomfield).
A NORTHERN PARULA was seen in a chickadee flock at the Elk River Wildlife
Sanctuary in Eureka (Rob Hewitt).
The BAR-TAILED GODWIT continued along the Mad River Estuary, being seen at
the end of Murray Road, in McKinleyville (Rob Fowler).
A WILLOW FLYCATCHER was seen along the Hammond Trail at Strawberry Creek,
near Clam Beach (John Hunter).
Two BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS were seen along the Mad River Estuary (Ron LeValley,
Charlene McAllister).
In DEL NORTE COUNTY, 1 STILT SANDPIPER, 1 WILSON'S PHALAROPE, and the
CRESTED CARACARA were all present in the Alexandre Dairy vicinity (Alan
Barron, Lucas Brug).
A 1 hour seawatch produced the following species: 2 RHINOCEROS AUKLETS, 1
ANCIENT MURRELET, 1 MARBLED MURRELET, 2 PARASITIC JAEGERS, 1 SOOTY
SHEARWATER, and 1 PACIFIC LOON (Scott Carey).
Another RED-EYED VIREO was found at the Orick Dump (Ken Irwin).
A PEREGRINE FALCON was at Fay Slough Wildlife Area (Chet Ogan).
Highlights from birding the Eel River Delta included: 1 PECTORAL SANDPIPER,
4 RED KNOTS, 1 AMERICAN AVOCET, and 2 adult PEREGRINE FALCONS at Eel River
Wildlife Area (Ocean Ranch); 2 PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVERS, 8 RED KNOTS, and 3
juvenile SEMIPALMATED SANPIPERS (Sean McAllister).
Inland in TRINITY COUNTY a NORTHERN GOSHAWK was seen at the Fir Cove
Campground at Ruth Lake and 1 WILLOW FLYCATCHER was seen at the south end of
the lake (Sean McAllister).
Nine HARLEQUIN DUCKS were seen while scoping from Luffenholtz Beach, just
south of Trinidad. One WILLOW FLYCATCHER was at the Blue Lake Fish Hatchery
(Scott Carey).
Four WILLOW FLYCATCHERS were at Shay Park in Arcata (Rob Fowler, Larry
Maurin, Jarred Wolfe). The YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT was still present at the
observers residence, along with a MCGILLIVRAY'S WARBLER (Rob Fowler).
Not much activity was out on the north spit with the only migrants present
being a WESTERN TANAGER (Cypress Grove) and a SWAINSON'S THRUSH (Horse
Pasture). Fifteen ELEGANT TERNS were off the North Jetty and 1 PEREGRINE
FALCON was seen in the Arcata Bottoms (David Fix, Jude Power, Kate McClane).
A BLUE-HEADED VIREO* was seen across the Orick Dump on Old Highway 101.
Another BLUE-HEADED VIREO* was seen at the Orick Dump, along with 2-3 WILLOW
FLYCATCHERS (Daryl Coldren, Lauren Tompkins).
A TOWNSEND'S and a HERMIT WARBLER was along Centerville Road, west of
Ferndale, and another TOWNSEND'S was at the Centerville Naval Base. A
SHARP-SHINNED and a COOPER'S HAWK were at Guthrie Creek on the BLM trail.
Fifteen SOOTY SHEARWATERS were seen near mouth of Wiener Creek @ the BLM
aquisition (Tom Leskiw).
4 Sept.
------------
The first LINCOLN'S SPARROW of the fall was at the Eureka Marsh (Tom
Leskiw).
A female BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER was seen along Little River Drive
(Larry Maurin, Megan Alejandrez). Little River Drive can be accessed from
taking the Central Avenue exit off of Highway 101, the same exit for Clam
Beach.
A "bright" PHILADELPHIA VIREO was seen at the base of Bald Hills Road, in
the gravel yard (Lucas Brug).
