This is a summary of reports from the Northwestern California Bird
Alert , sponsored by the City of Arcata, Redwood Region Audubon Society, and
generous support from local birders. Most birds reported are in Humboldt
County unless otherwise noted.
Birds in caps under the "birds mentioned" section have less than 50
(plus or minus 5) records of occurrence in Northwestern California as
defined in Stan Harris's " Northwestern California Birds" (3rd edition,
2005). California Bird Records Committee review species are noted with an

During a day of birding on the Eel River Bottoms 7 ROSS'S GEESE, 2
CANVASBACK, 2 HOODED MERGANSER, 130 RING-NECKED DUCK, 1 FERRUGINOUS HAWK, 1
LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 2 GLAUCOUS GULL, 1 "NELSON'S" GULL, 2 SAY'S PHOEBE, 1
BEWICK'S WREN, and 1 WHITE-THROATED SPARROW (Rob Fowler).

There was a THAYER'S GULL at the KFC in Eureka (Rob Hewitt).
7 March

There were 6 BALD EAGLE seen at the Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge
during the Aleutian Goose fly off observations (David Fix).
8 March

There was a SLATE-COLORED JUNCO in Eureka and 1 ALLEN'S HUMMINGBIRD, 1
RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD, 4 ROSS'S GEESE, 25 TREE SWALLOW, AND 4 VIOLET-GREEN
SWALLOWS at the Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge (Scott Carey).
There are now 2 BURROWING OWL at the confluence of Widow White Creek and the
Mad River (foot of Murray Rd., McK.) (Gary Lester).
9 March

During a walk on the Benbow Trail a single BALD EAGLE, 1 GOLDEN EAGLE, and 8
WHITE_TROATED SWIFTS were observed (Jay Sooter).
There were 18 TUNDRA SWANS seen flying north through western McKinleyville
(Kerry Ross).
There was a BLUE-WINGED TEAL at the Arcata Marsh (George Zyminsky).
There was a NASHVILLE WARBLER, a "gray headed" ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, and
8-10 SELASPHOROUS HUMMINGBIRDS at the Arcata Marsh (Scott Carey).
11 March

There was an AMERICAN BITTERN and a ALLEN'S HUMMINGBIRD at Fea's Slough
(Tony Kurz).
12 March
-------------
From Del Norte County; A first cycle ICELAND GULL was reported from the
Alexandre Dairy on Fred Height Dr. (north side of the Smith River). The bird
was on the west side of the road (Lucas Brug).
There were 1000-1300 Brant and 4 FORESTER'S TERN were in north Humboldt Bay
(David Fix).
There were 9 SNOWY PLOVER in a "habitat restoration area" on the South Spit
of Humboldt Bay. Near the tip of the spit there were 4 LAPLAND LONGSPUR in a
short grass field near the restrooms (Kerry Ross).
