This is the Santa Barbara Audubon Society's rare bird report being recorded
on Friday, February 29 at 2:30 p.m. If you have a rare bird sighting to
report, call Karen Bridgers at 964-1316. For those of you who are getting
the transcript on the Internet, the rare bird alert number for Santa Barbara
is (805) 964-8240.
The GRAY FLYCATCHER found in the Goleta Cemetery on January 5 was still
there on February 14. Go south on Turnpike Road to Hollister, and turn left.
Pass the traffic light at Puente and take a left at the next street, which
is San Antonio Road. The cemetery is at the end of the road. Keep to the
right and go to the southeast corner of the cemetery near where it abuts the
ball fields. The bird has been actively working the small grove of pines and
the fence lines.
The wintering PINE WARBLER outside the Texas Instruments building in Goleta
was last reported on January 14th, so an update would be appreciated. Take
Storke Road south from Hollister. Go past the light that leads to the
Marketplace mall, and get immediately into the left lane. Turn left on
Bollay Drive. Bollay bends sharply right; make that sharp turn and look in
the pines in the area.
A RED-NAPED SAPSUCKER was seen at Stow House in Goleta on Tuesday, in the
oaks and eucalyptus near the southeast corner of the parking lot.
A male EURASIAN WIGEON was in the northeast corner of Devereux Slough this
morning. Another EURASIAN WIGEON was at the UCSB Campus Lagoon on the 23rd.
The LONG-TAILED DUCK in the Santa Barbara Harbor was still there on the
23rd. The PALM WARBLER that has been seen on the beach, on the jetty, and on
Sea Landing, was seen the same day. A GREATER SCAUP was also offshore.
At the Carpinteria Nature Park, off Ash Avenue, a dozen BLUE-WINGED TEAL
were present on Wednesday.
On the 24th, a LEWIS'S WOODPECKER remained on a utility pole along Farren
Road in Goleta.
There are now four ROSS'S GEESE in the pond at the Rancho Goleta mobile home
park at the end of Ward Drive in Goleta.
A few wintering BLACK SKIMMERS remain on East Beach.
Highlights at Cachuma Lake this week included several immature BALD EAGLES,
10 COMMON GOLDENEYE, a pair of WOOD DUCKS, and a PEREGRINE FALCON.
In the North County, a wintering EASTERN PHOEBE has returned to River Oaks
Park in Santa Maria, and was seen on the 8th, toward the back of the ponds
near the freeway.
On Figueroa Mountain, near Ranger Peak on the 27th, there was a CLARK'S
NUTCRACKER [and a TOWNSEN'S SOLITAIRE]. Up to 40 CASSIN'S FINCHES were here
on the 24th.
At the Guadalupe Sewage Plant pastures, several TRICOLORED BLACKBIRDS were
seen on Wednesday.
A female COMMON GOLDENEYE continued at the Santa Ynez River mouth yesterday.
The first year GLAUCOUS GULL was also there.
In Old La Purisima Mission Park, off south G Street in Lompoc, a wintering
WHITE-THROATED SPARROW has returned and is in the blackberry bushes at the
southeast corner of the park and was seen yesterday. A WHITE-WINGED DOVE has
also been on wires in the southeast corner of the park, and was seen this
morning.
In the front pond at Waller Park in Santa Maria, a SNOW GOOSE and the
CACKLING GOOSE remain, and were seen on the 14th.
That is all the bird news for now, but, again, if you have a rare sighting
to report, call Karen Bridgers at 964-1316. Good birding in Santa Barbara
County.
