This is the Santa Barbara Audubon Society's rare bird report being recorded
on Friday, March 21 at 2:00 p.m. If you have a rare bird sighting to report,
call Karen Bridgers at 964-1316. For those of you who are getting the
transcript on the Internet, the rare bird alert number for Santa Barbara is
(805) 964-8240.
Along Atascadero Creek, between Turnpike and Walnut, two female HOODED
MERGANSERS were seen on Wednesday.
A male EURASIAN WIGEON was still in the wetland area below the UCSB bluffs
on the north side of the campus on the 16th. At the north end of Devereux
Slough, a GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was on the golf course on the 16th.
The LONG-TAILED DUCK in the Santa Barbara Harbor was still there on the 8th.
There are still two ROSS'S GEESE in the pond at the Rancho Goleta mobile
home park at the end of Ward Drive in Goleta.
Highlights at Cachuma Lake this week included an adult and an immature BALD
EAGLE, and two WHITE PELICANS.
In the North County, at the Guadalupe Sewage Plant pastures, two PACIFIC
GOLDEN-PLOVERS were seen yesterday, along with two CACKLING GEESE and more
than 20 male TRICOLORED BLACKBIRDS.
In Old La Purisima Mission Park, off south G Street in Lompoc, a wintering
WHITE-THROATED SPARROW has returned and is in the blackberry bushes at the
southeast corner of the park and was seen on the 19th. A WHITE-WINGED DOVE
that has been on wires in the southeast corner of the park was seen
yesterday.
[A GLAUCOUS GULL is still at Ocean Park. This afternoon, it was seen in a
group of gulls on the east side of the tracks.]
In the front pond at Waller Park in Santa Maria, a SNOW GOOSE, a ROSS'S
GOOSE and the CACKLING GOOSE remain, and were seen on March 15. Note also
that LAWRENCE'S GOLDFINCHES breed in the park.
That is all the bird news for now, but, again, if you have a rare sighting
to report, call Karen Bridgers at 964-1316. Good birding in Santa Barbara
County.
