This is the Santa Barbara Audubon Society's rare bird report being recorded
on Friday, May 2 at 3:30 p.m. If you have a rare bird sighting to report,
call Karen Bridgers at 964-1316. For those of you who are getting the
transcript on the Internet, the rare bird alert number for Santa Barbara is
(805) 964-8240.
The LONG-TAILED DUCK that has wintered in the Santa Barbara Harbor was still
there last weekend.
Along Farren Road in west Goleta, a LEWIS'S WOODPECKERS and a GRASSHOPPER
SPARROW were seen on Tuesday. Last weekend, a COMMON GROUND-DOVE was calling
from the avocado orchard north of the reservoir.
A BANK SWALLOW was seen Wednesday over the Goleta Slough between UCSB and
the airport. A SNOW GOOSE and a CATTLE EGRET were in Goleta Slough as seen
from the UCSB bluffs on the north side of the campus yesterday.
A COMMON MOORHEN has been near the footbridge at Lake Los Carneros for about
the last week.
A TROPICAL KINGBIRD was still on the north side of the Bird Refuge on
Sunday.
There are still two ROSS'S GEESE in the pond at the Rancho Goleta mobile
home park at the end of Ward Drive in Goleta.
On Figueroa Mountain on Monday, six CASSIN'S FINCHES were around site 12 at
the campground, and RED CROSSBILLS were near the old picnic area. A CLARK'S
NUTCRACKER was found near the entrance to the campground last weekend.
In the Cuyama Valley, several BREWER'S SPARROWS were singing in Ballinger
Canyon yesterday, along with SAGE SPARROWS. The Cuyama Dairy property had
both TRI-COLORED and YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDS.
In the North County, PURPLE MARTINS have returned to the Alisal Ranch area
of Solvang, with a dozen of the birds seen as early as March 28.
At Waller Park in Santa Maria, a SNOW GOOSE, a ROSS'S GOOSE and the CACKLING
GOOSE were still in the front pond on April 14th. Note also that LAWRENCE'S
GOLDFINCHES breed in the park.
That is all the bird news for now, but, again, if you have a rare sighting
to report, call Karen Bridgers at 964-1316. Good birding in Santa Barbara
County.
