This is the Santa Barbara County rare bird report being posted on Sunday,
January 31, 2010 at 4:00 p.m. If you have a rare bird sighting to report,
please post it to sbcobirding@yahoogroups.com. The rare bird alert number
for Santa Barbara is no longer in service.

An EASTERN PHOEBE has been seen pretty regularly in the fennel along
Whittier Drive near the entrance to Ocean Meadows Golf Course. A flock of
geese containing several CACKLING GEESE moves between the golf course and
Devereux Slough. An oiled RED-NECKED GREBE was at the north end of the
slough today.

A TROPICAL KINGBIRD has been at Devereux Slough by the Cliff House.

In Isla Vista, look for an immature male ORCHARD ORIOLE in trees and shrubs
in front of the last house on the north side of Pasado.

At Goleta Beach Park, look for a male EURASIAN WIGEON that moves up and down
the creek. Probably the same bird has been seen at Area K at UCSB and at
the Goleta Sewage Treatment Plant.

The GRACE'S WARBLER continues in the pines at the south end of the Bella
Vista Open Space in west Goleta. In the same general area, a TROPICAL
KINGBIRD was seen in street trees in front of 271 Placer Drive.

At Lake Los Carneros, a LEWIS'S WOODPECKER continues in the row of pines
closest to Los Carneros Road on the west side of the lake. An AMERICAN
BITTERN and a COMMON MOORHEN have also seen on or around the lake. A female
SUMMER TANAGER was reported from the eucalyptus tree with many sapsucker
holes at the back of the train station.

San Marcos Foothills has quite a few LAWRENCE'S GOLDFINCHES and several Rock
Wrens.

HOODED MERGANSERS and a TROPICAL KINGBIRD continue at the Andres Clark Bird
Refuge.

A BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER has been seen along the west side of Carpinteria
Creek between Highway 101 and Carpinteria Avenue.

Highlights from Lake Cachuma include AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS, 2 adult and 7
immature BALD EAGLES, WOOD DUCKS, HOODED MERGANSERS and CACKLING GEESE.

2 RED PHALAROPES were in the Santa Ynez River estuary at Ocean Park in
Lompoc.

FERRUGINOUS HAWKS have returned to the Torrey Pine roost tree in Lompoc at
the corner of East Olive and South C Streets.

A SNOW GOOSE, a ROSS'S GOOSE and 2 CACKLING GEESE continue at Waller Park in
Santa Maria.

Good Birding in Santa Barbara County and please post your sightings.
