This is the Santa Barbara County rare bird report being posted on Sunday,
February 28, 2010 at 4:00 p.m. If you have a rare bird sighting to report,
please post it to sbcobirding@yahoogroups.com. The rare bird alert number
for Santa Barbara is no longer in service.
This is the time of year to see large groups of migrating scoters, brant,
and loons. Campus Point and Coal Oil Point are good spots.
The EASTERN PHOEBE was last reported on the 12th in the fields east and west
of the entrance to Ocean Meadows Golf Course on Whittier Drive. A flock of
geese containing several CACKLING GEESE moves between the golf course and
Devereux Slough. An AMERICAN AVOCET was seen at the slough earlier this
week.
At Goleta Beach Park, look for a male EURASIAN WIGEON that moves up and down
the creek. Probably the same bird has been seen at Area K at UCSB, the
Goleta Sewage Treatment Plant, and Devereux Slough.
The GRACE'S WARBLER was last reported on the 13th in the pines at the south
end of the Bella Vista Open Space in west Goleta.
In Tucker's Grove Park, look for a female SUMMER TANAGER in oaks by the
restroom near the entrance, and a RED-NAPED SAPSUCKER at the lower end of
the upper parking area.
San Marcos Foothills has quite a few LAWRENCE'S GOLDFINCHES and several Rock
Wrens.
Highlights from Lake Cachuma include adult and immature BALD EAGLES, WOOD
DUCKS, CANVASBACKS, HOODED MERGANSERS, COMMON GOLDENEYE, and CACKLING GEESE.
FERRUGINOUS HAWKS have returned to the Torrey Pine roost tree in Lompoc at
the corner of East Olive and South C Streets.
A SNOW GOOSE, a ROSS'S GOOSE and 2 CACKLING GEESE continue at Waller Park in
Santa Maria. A YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER was in Preisker Park around Area 1.
Good Birding in Santa Barbara County and please post your sightings.
