This is the Santa Barbara County rare bird report being posted on Saturday,
March 20, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. If you have a rare bird sighting to report,
please post it to sbcobirding@yahoogroups.com. The rare bird alert number
for Santa Barbara is no longer in service.
This is the time of year to see large groups of migrating scoters, brant,
and loons. Campus Point and Coal Oil Point are good spots. Passerine
migrants and breeders are also showing up along local creeks.
A male GREATER SCAUP is being seen off and on at Devereux Slough. A
TROPICAL KINGBIRD continues near the parking area at Coal Oil Point.
A singing male BALTIMORE ORIOLE was at the west end of the row of trees that
ends just south of the red barn near Isla Vista School.
9 COMMON MURRES were seen this morning just offshore from Campus Point at
UCSB.
At Goleta Beach Park, look for a male EURASIAN WIGEON that moves up and down
the creek. Probably the same bird has been seen at Area K at UCSB, the
Goleta Sewage Treatment Plant, and Devereux Slough.
The LEWIS'S WOODPECKER continues at Lake Los Carneros in Goleta.
San Marcos Foothills has quite a few LAWRENCE'S GOLDFINCHES and several Rock
Wrens.
A SOLITARY SANDPIPER has been around the debris basin on San Antonio Creek
just below Highway 154. This area can also be reached by hiking upstream
from Kiwanis Meadows at Tucker's Grove Park.
Highlights from Lake Cachuma include adult and immature BALD EAGLES, WOOD
DUCKS, HOODED MERGANSERS, COMMON GOLDENEYE, and AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS.
FERRUGINOUS HAWKS have returned to the Torrey Pine roost tree in Lompoc at
the corner of East Olive and South C Streets.
A SNOW GOOSE, a ROSS'S GOOSE and 2 CACKLING GEESE continue at Waller Park in
Santa Maria.
Good Birding in Santa Barbara County and please post your sightings.
