This is the Santa Barbara County rare bird report being posted on Wednesday,
July 28, 2010 at 8:00 p.m. If you have a rare bird sighting to report,
please post it to sbcobirding@yahoogroups.com. The rare bird alert number
for Santa Barbara is no longer in service.
A BLACK VULTURE was found on July 18 in west Goleta. The bird has roosted
with Turkey Vultures in the eucalyptus trees on the south side of Highway
101 just west of the Winchester Canyon exit. The bird seems to leave the
roost mid-morning and has been seen up the coast as far as El Capitan Ranch.
An immature REDDISH EGRET was found in south Goleta and has been seen in
Goleta and Devereux Sloughs. An immature REDDISH EGRET was seen earlier in
the week at the east end of Lake Cachuma along with an adult BALD EAGLE. It
is not known if the egret sightings represent the same bird or two different
birds.
Shorebird migration is in full swing. Places to check include Devereux
Slough, Goleta Beach, the Goleta Sewage Treatment Plant, the Mission Creek
outfall, the Santa Ynez and Santa Maria River estuaries, the Santa Maria
Sewage Treatment Plant, and the Guadalupe Pasture. Birds seen recently
include PECTORAL SANDPIPER, SEMI-PALMATED SANDPIPER, RUDDY TURNSTONE, LEAST
TERN, and WANDERING TATTLER.
Up to three PEREGRINE FALCONS were seen at the Santa Barbara harbor.
Good Birding in Santa Barbara County and please post your sightings.
