This is the Southeastern CA weekly RBA summary. We cover Imperial,
Riverside, and San Bernardino Counties. Names in the report are generally
those of the reporting party and not necessarily the person claiming the
first sighting.

SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY
Matthew Baker reported a GRAY FLYCATCHER in Ford Park in Redlands at the
top of the hill near the picnic tables and 5 male and 5 female RING-NECKED
DUCKS in Ford Park in the top lagoon. Both birds were seen on Jan. 26.
RIVERSIDE COUNTY
Patrick Temple and Lynn Miller reported a PINE WARBLER in a large Canary
Island pine in front of their house near Sycamore Canyon in Riverside on
Jan. 26. The bird apparently foraged for about 10 minute, so they had good
looks at it. Patrick said it was very drab-looking, suggesting a female or
immature.
Roger Higson spotted a PINK-SIDED JUNCO in the Blythe area on Jan. 27.
Nick and Mary Freeman birded the Mecca Beach Campground on Jan. 27 where
they saw a third year LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL.
Linda Davis was birding the northern part of the Salton Sea when she
spotted a LEWIS’S WOODPECKER on Jan. 28. The bird was seen at the sea end
of Lincoln Rd.
Robbie Suave birded the San Jacinto Wildlife Area on Jan. 28 and saw a
FERRUGINOUS HAWK on Bridge St. and the EASTERN PHOEBE.
IMPERIAL COUNTY
Guy McCaskie posted a report after birding the Imperial Valley and the
south end of the Salton Sea on Jan. 26. Highlights included 1 hatch-year
GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE at Sunbeam Lake near Seeley, about 10 dark-
morph SNOW GEESE, 1 CACKLING GOOSE, at Sunbeam Lake, 2 BLUE-WINGED TEAL at
Fig Lagoon, 5 REDHEAD, 5 GREATER SCAUP, 10 COMMON GOLDENEYE, 1 RING-NECKED
PHEASANT, 10 WESTERN GREBE, 1 NEOTROPIC CORMORANT, an adult at Fig Lagoon,
1 LEAST BITTERN, 1 immature ROSEATE SPOONBILL at Red Hill, 1 OSPREY, 1
WHITE-TAILED KITE near Obsidian Butte, 2 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 3 COOPER’S
HAWKS, 2 FERRUGINOUS HAWKS, 1 MERLIN, 4 PEREGRINE FALCONS, 3 PRAIRIE
FALCONS, 1 SORA, 50 SANDHILL CRANES, 200 MOUNTAIN PLOVER, about 150 to the
south of Fig Lagoon and about 50 more on English Rd. north of Eddins, 1
LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 3 LAUGHING GULL, 2 THAYER’S GULLS, one adult and one
first-winter plumage bird together at Obsidian Butte, 1 second/third-
winter plumage LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL at Red Hill, 1 GLAUCOUS-WINGED
GULL with bleached/worn plumage at the mouth of the Alamo River, 1 BARN
OWL, 1 COSTA’S HUMMINGBIRD, 5 BELTED KINGFISHER, 1 GRAY FLYCATCHER at
Cattle Call Park in Brawley, 1 EASTERN PHOEBE at Fig Lagoon, 1 immature
male VERMILION FLYCATCHER at Lakeview Golfcourse, 1 BLACK-TAILED
GNATCATCHER, 2 VESPER SPARROW, and 5 LINCOLN’S SPARROWS.
Ron Cyger also birded the Salton Sea with the Pasadena Audubon Society.
Highlights of that trip included 300 MOUNTAIN PLOVER in a burned field on
Edgar east of Pearle, 3 FLAMINGOS at the end of Bowles, the GRAY
FLYCATCHER and a RED-NAPED SAPSUCKER at Cattle Call Park, and the GREATER-
WHITE FRONTED GOOSE and CACKLING GOOSE at Sunbeam Lake, and a HEERMAN’S
GULL on the ponds at the SSNWR HQs. He also spotted several raptors
including FERRUGINOUS HAWK, PEREGRINE FALCON, PRAIRIE FALCON, OSPREY,
WHITE-TAILED KITE, and COOPER’S HAWK. All sightings were on the weekend of
Jan. 26 and 27.
Nick and Mary Freeman birded the Salton Sea with the Los Angeles Audubon
on Jan. 26 and 27. This group had 2 SPOTTED TOWHEE, a FOX SPARROW, and a
PEREGRINE FALCON at the Wister Unit, 2 PRAIRIE FALCONS, a second-year
YELLOW-FOOTED GULL, 2 first-year GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULLS, and an adult
HEERMAN’S GULL on the Rock Hill Pond Trail, 400+ SANDHILL CRANES in a
field at the NW corner of Hwy111 and Carey, a male and female VERMILION
FLYCATCHER and the GRAY FLYCATCHER at Cattle Call Park, and about 10
MOUNTAIN PLOVER at the SW corner of Lack and Walker.

In general, birds that are on this weekly summary are those that are
classified as at least rare in “Birds of Southern California” by Garrett
and Dunn, “Birds of the Salton Sea” by Patten, McCaskie, and Unitt, or
in “Birds of the Lower Colorado River Valley” by Rosenberg, Ohmart,
Hunter, and Anderson. Rarity can be regional or seasonal. For example, a
nuthatch reported at the Salton Sea, where it is rare, may be on the
summary. That same bird reported from the San Bernardino Mountains, where
it is common, would not be. A sparrow reported as a rarity in Riverside
in July, may be common there in December.
