SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY

Steve Myers observed the CRESTED CARACARA on Feb. 28 at Mojave Narrows
Regional Park, and Sandy Koonce reported seeing it a bit later that same
day. The bird has not been reported since that date. Later in the week, on
March 1, Steve refound the EASTERN PHOEBE at Mojave Narrows. The bird was
about 200 yards north of the Y intersection on the dirt road accessed from
the NE corner of Horseshoe Lake.

Sandy Koonce found at least 8 LEWIS’S WOODPECKERS and a BALD EAGLE at Lake
Silverwood on Feb. 28.

Brad Singer spotted at least a dozen WOOD DUCKS at Grout Bay in Big Bear
on Mar. 2. The area must be birded from the road as it is closed to eagle
nesting.

RIVERSIDE COUNTY

Lynn Miller reported a SWAINSON’S HAWK soaring near the pond by the
outhouse at San Jacinto Wildlife Area on Feb. 29. Lynn also reported the
continuing TUNDRA SWAN at Pond 2.

Madeline Bauer saw the continuing GRAY FLYCATCHER on Feb. 29 and March 2.
The bird was in the leafless willows along 66th just west of Charles on
the golfcourse side of the fence. Madeline also spotted the continuing
MERLIN perched high in the eucalyptus along 66th about halfway between
William and Lucretia.

John Green also saw the continuing TUNDRA SWAN at the San jacinto Wildlife
Area on March 1. The bird was not in Pond 2, but instead, was in what
appears to be Pond G1/G2.

Bill Moramarco found a female HOODED MERGANSER at the large vernal pool at
Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Reserve on March 1.

IMPERIAL COUNTY
Guy McCaskie reported numerous gulls after birding the west end of Bowles
and the mouth of the Alamo River. Most notably, he found an adult
HEERMANN’S GULL in breeding plumage at Obsidian Butte, a first-winter MEW
GULL near the north end of Lack Rd and an adult at Obsidian Butte, a first
winter THAYER’S GULL at Obsidian Butte, the continuing third winter LESSER
BLACK-BACKED GULL at Obsidian Butte, and adult YELLOW-FOOTED GULL at
Obsidian Butte and a first winter bird at the Alamo River mouth, and a
second winter GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL at the Alamo River mouth. All sightings
were on March 2.

Matthew Baker reported a LONG-TAILED DUCK at Lack and Lindsay on Mar. 2, 4
of the continuing TUNDRA SWANS near Unit 1, and an adult HEERMANN’S GULL
at Sonny Bono HQs.

Patrick Del Pizzo also spotted the LONG-TAILED DUCK in the ponds at Lack
and Lindsay on March 4 and a juvenile GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL along the edge
of the sea in that area.

In general, birds that are on this weekly summary are those that are
classified as at least rare in “Birds of Southern California” by Garrett
and Dunn, “Birds of the Salton Sea” by Patten, McCaskie, and Unitt, or
in “Birds of the Lower Colorado River Valley” by Rosenberg, Ohmart,
Hunter, and Anderson. Rarity can be regional or seasonal. For example, a
nuthatch reported at the Salton Sea, where it is rare, may be on the
summary. That same bird reported from the San Bernardino Mountains, where
it is common, would not be. A sparrow reported as a rarity in Riverside
in July, may be common there in December.
