This is the CONNECTICUT RARE BIRD ALERT for November 5, 2007.

Note: This is a summary of the rare birds in Connecticut over the past
week or more. A daily email list, sponsored by the Connecticut
Ornithological Association (COA), is also available. See the note at
the end of this report for more details.

Compiler: Nick Bonomo (nbonomo*at*gmail.com)

The contents of the following report were prepared by the compiler
named above. Any questions, comments, or corrections should be
addressed to the compiler at the email address noted.

Species list:
COMMON GROUND-DOVE (review species)
HARRIS'S SPARROW (review species)

Connecticut's first (if accepted) COMMON GROUND-DOVE continues in East
Haven as of 11/4.

If accepted by the ARCC, this would represent a first state record for
Connecticut. All observers should submit their documentation of the
bird. For directions on writing and submitting reports, go to
http://ctbirding.org/rare_report.htm. All observers are encouraged to
submit a detailed report. Thank you!

Directions:
The location is on Proto Drive/Ora Avenue in East Haven, CT. Turn off
Coe Ave at the corner marked Proto Drive; a cheese company is on the
corner. Note that many maps and on-line mapping programs show it
mis-spelled as Porto Drive.

As you drive down the road, the pavement turns to gravel. The bird is
being seen to the right after the road turns to gravel, in a spot
where the edge has been pushed back from the road a bit (looks a bit
like a pull-over or turn-around). This is adjacent to where a new
warehouse is being constructed to the left. It is before the
left-hand turn toward the landfill hill.

Birders have been putting seed along the edge of the pull-over which
is where this bird is feeding. Many birds, including Mourning Doves
and sparrows, are also eating this seed.
Please keep your distance from the pull-over, as the dove is quite
skittish and often disappears for several minutes at a time.

A HARRIS'S SPARROW was found on 11/3 at Allen's Meadows in Wilton and
continues as of 11/5.

Directions:

From the South and West:
Take I-95 North to Exit 15, Rt. 7 North OR take the Merritt Parkway to Exit 39,
Rt. 7 North. Follow Rt. 7 North for approx. 5 miles until you pass the Wilton
High School on your left. You will come to a traffic light for the
YMCA. Continue past the light for approx. 100 yards. Entrance to the
fields is on the left.

From the North:
I-84 to Route 7 South into Wilton. After passing Olmstead Hill Road
and an assisted living facility on your right, take your next right
into Allen's Meadows.

From the East Merritt Parkway:
Get off Exit 41 Route 33. Take a left at the bottom of the ramp. Continue on 33
until it merges into Route 7. After you pass the Wilton High School
on your left, you will come to a traffic light for the YMCA. Continue past the
light for approx. 100 yards. Entrance to the fields on the left.

Once at the fields:
When you get there and turn into the park driveway turn slight right
and then immediately left driving the paved road with the black high
mesh fencing running parallel to your right. Turn right at the end of
the fence by the batting cage and drive down the gravel road as far as
it will go towards the community gardens park here and walk the gravel
path at a right angle to the road you came in on (towards the dirt
mounds at the back). When you hit the end of the garden plots turn
right. In the second plot along in the back corner is where seed has
been placed; the bird has been feeding here quite a bit.
