For Friday, March 19th, this is Birdline Delaware from the Delaware Museum
of Natural History in Greenville. The 2010 Unofficial Delaware State Year
List now stands at 169 species.
The OSPREYS have returned this week to Wilmington Marsh. OSPREY was also
seen over Dover. The PEREGRINE Cam at the Brandywine building had lots of
activity this week, as the male battled an intruder in the nest box. At
least 3 PEREGRINE FALCONS are now in downtown Wilmington. Two dead
PEREGRINES were found on rooftops in downtown Wilmington this week, though
to be long deceased.
The hawk watch at Cape Henlopen State Park restarted this week for another
season of spring hawk migration. Already, the count has recorded BLACK
VULTURE, OSPREY, COOPER'S HAWK and AMERICAN KESTREL. There has been a
spectacular scoter migration offshore with 1000's of BLACK and SURF SCOTER,
plus NORTHERN GANNET, HORNED GREBE, COMMON, and RED-THROATED LOONS. The
first PINE WARBLER of the year was reported yesterday.
The first FORESTER'S TERN was reported at Prime Hook NWR this week, along
with TREE SWALLOW and BROWN THRASHER. A flock of WILD TURKEYS off Oyster
Rocks Rd. included a leucanistic female.
Silver Lake in Rehoboth Beach still has over 200 CANVASBACK plus 20 RUDDY
DUCKS and 3 AMERICAN COOTS. The north side of the Rehoboth boardwalk had 24
NORTHERN GANNETS feeding offshore. Bay Vista had both BROWN-HEADED and
RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH and a dozen CEDAR WAXWINGS.
There was a good concentration of birds at Indian River Inlet. LONG-TAILED
DUCK, plus BLACK and SURF SCOTER remain. 3 GREAT CORMORANTS were on the
jetty. Shorebirds included AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER, RUDDY TURNSTONE, DUNLIN,
SANDERLING, and PURPLE SANDPIPER. A PIED BILLED GREBE was also seen by the
marina and an AMERICAN BITTERN was standing on the knoll at Burton's Island
causeway.
PINE WARBLER was also found at Abbott's Mill Nature Center this week, along
with a RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH. COOPER'S HAWK, PILEATED WOODPECKER, EASTERN
BLUEBIRD, PHOEBE, and TREE SWALLOWS were also reported. Blair's Pond had
HOODED MERGANSER and RING-NECKED DUCK.
A flock of about 150 AMERICAN AVOCETS are being seen on the bayside of the
Logan Tract this week. An AMERICAN BITTERN was seen along the shore one
evening this week. North Pond had 13 BONAPARTE'S GULLS, including one
changing to breeding plumage, along with 10 LAUGHING GULLS. No EURASIAN
WIGEONS were found, but LESSER SCAUP, RING-NECKED DUCK and HOODED MERGANSER
were all reported. A single SNOW BUNTING remains along Cartanza Road north
of Little Creek.
BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERONS have returned to Bombay Hook NWR near Smyrna this
week. HOODED and COMMON MERGANSER, PIED-BILLED GREBE, TUNDRA SWAN and
RING-NECKED DUCK were still reported. A flooded field by the Swimming Hole
on the Alle House road had 22 GREATER and 3 LESSER YELLOWLEGS. 16 NORTHERN
BOBWHITE were seen by the Corn crib behind Bear Swamp and the EASTERN
SCREECH OWL was seen at the box by Shearness Tower.
4 GREAT EGRETS were seen at Dragon Run near Delaware City. A dozen more
GREAT EGRETS were in the trees off Pea Patch Island heronry this evening. A
RING-NECKED PHEASANT was seen along Dutch Neck Road. The Predator Bridge,
aka Reedy Point had BALD EAGLE and PEREGRINE FALCON, along with BLACK
VULTURE, SHARP-SHINNED and COOPER'S HAWK nearby. An AMERICAN KESTREL was
seen chasing RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS over Dragon Run. RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET and
TREE SWALLOWS were also reported.
The AMERICAN KESTREL pair were sitting side-by-side at the nest tree in
Brandywine Creek State Park on Sunday. The Winterthur ponds had 2 FEMALE
HOODED MERGANSERS and an AMERICAN COOT. Hoopes' Reservoir had COMMON
MERGANSER, BUFFLEHEADS, and PIED-BILLED GREBE this week. A MERLIN was seen
this week at Ashland nature Center.
An EASTERN MEADOWLARK was found at Middle Run Nature Preserve near Newark
this week. EASTERN PHOEBE and BLUEBIRD were also reported. COMMON MERGANSER
and RING-NECKED DUCK were seen at Newark reservoir. WOOD DUCK, COMMON
MERGANSER, PILEATED WOODPECKER, BROWN CREEPER, and GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET
were seen at White Clay Creek.
