For August, Friday the 13th, this is Birdline Delaware from the Delaware
Museum of Natural History in Greenville. The 2010 Unofficial Delaware State
Year List is at 308 species this week.

A BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING DUCK was found today at the north side of the
Broadkill Beach impoundments of Prime Hook NWR. This coincides with the
previous report in early July of three birds at Miller's Creek near
Assawoman WMA and also three birds at Cape May, New Jersey. A rash of
BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING DUCK sightings in New Jersey this week included 2 at
Forsytle (aka Brigantine) NWR and 1 at Wreck Pond in Monmouth Co. near
Asbury Park.

A BLACK-NECKED STILT with almost fully grown young were seen earlier in the
week on the north side of the Broadkill Beach Rd. The south side of mud
flats had a RED KNOT and 20+ PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, plus STILT and
WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER.

2 SANDWICH TERNS were again seen this week at Fowler's Beach at the north
end of Prime Hook NWR. 3 GULL-BILLED TERNS, plus CASPIAN, ROYAL, LEAST and
BLACK SKIMMER were also reported. 2-3 MARBLED GODWITS continue to be seen at
Fowler's, but none seen today. 4 WILLETS were also seen, including a larger
"WESTERN' WILLET. 2 BONAPARTE'S GULLS and LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL have also
been reported.

Lots of herons are being reported along the Prime Hook Beach Road, including
a juvenal WHITE IBIS and 5 TRICOLORED HERONS. Also reported were GADWALL and
a very early WILSON'S SNIPE. The Boardwalk trail at the refuge headquarters
had YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO and SOLITARY SANDPIPER.

Another SANDWICH TERN was reported this week along the bayside at the point
in Cape Henlopen State Park. There were 4 SANDWICH TERNS reported in Cape
May this week. An immature WHITE IBIS and BLACK TERN were reported at
Gordon's Pond this weekend.

3 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS were found at Dewey Beach, north of Tower Rd
today. Good numbers of shorebirds along the bayshore at Dewey included 2
SPOTTED SANDPIPERS, RUDDY TURNSTONE and SANDERLING, and 20+ SEMIPALMATED
PLOVERS. There were also 12+ royal terns and lots of Forster's Terns at
Anchor Rd in Dewey.

A ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK along with YELLOW WARBLERS was reported at Bay
Vista in Rehoboth Beach. BROWN-HEADED NUTHATCHES were also seen in good
numbers. HAIRY WOODPECKERS were reported at Old Landing, an uncommon bird
along the coast. YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO, BLUE GROSBEAK and INDIGO BUNTINGS
were also reported, along with a GREEN HERON.

A WILSON'S PHALAROPE was seen today at Raymond Pool in Bombay Hook NWR. Over
100 AMERICAN AVOCETS are still being seen at the refuge, along with
BLACK-NECKED STILT. Other shorebirds reported included WESTERN,
WHITE-RUMPED, STILT and PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, and LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER.
There has been a tremendous influx of waders into the refuge including 6
TRICOLORED HERONS, LITTLE BLUE HERON, CATTLE EGRET, GREEN HERON and
YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT HERON. BANK, BARN, TREE and CLIFF SWALLOWS were seen on
the wires along the entrance road. LEAST and CASPIAN TERNS were seen at the
refuge today. A BOBOLINK was found at Taylor's gut at Woodland Beach
Wildlife Area.

RUDDY TURNSTONE and SANDERLING were seen along the Port Mahon Road. Also
seen was SPOTTED SANDPIPER and RED KNOT. Two dozen ROYAL TERNS were seen at
the old bait shop pilings. RED KNOTS were also seen flying past the flats at
Kitts Hummock. A SEDGE WREN was reported at the Logan Tract this week.

An early NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH was seen at Blackbird State Forest, along with
2 PROTHONOTARY and BLACK AND WHITE WARBLER. This is one of the few places in
New Castle Co were PROTHONOTARY'S nest. Also seen were BLACK-BILLED and
YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO and BLUE GROSBEAK.

A CANADA WARBLER was along the banks of the Brandywine at Brandywine Creek
State Park last weekend. Also reported were 3 AMERICAN REDSTARTS, OVENBIRD,
and BLACK AND WHITE WARBLER. The immature LITTLE BLUE HERON continues to be
seen at the Winterthur Ponds at Rt 100 and 92.

BOBOLINK, AMERICAN REDSTART and LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH were reported at
nearby Flint Woods near Centerville. A BARRED OWL was also found there.

More BOBOLINKS were reported at Ashland Nature Center. GREEN HERON was seen
along the Red Clay creek. Also reported were YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO and
BALTIMORE ORIOLE.

BLUE-WINGED WARBLER, AMERICAN REDSTART and NORTHERN PARULA were seen at
Middle Run wildlife Area near Newark this week. Resident birds seen included
WHITE-EYED VIREO and BALTIMORE ORIOLE.

MUTE SWAN continues to be seen on Hoopes' Reservoir. SCARLET TANAGER,
BALTIMORE ORIOLE and OVENBIRD were found at the Hillside Mill cove.

A single COMMON NIGHTHAWK was spotted over a development in Bear this
weekend. A PILEATED WOODPECKER is also frequenting this area. No NIGHTHAWKS
have been reported yet at the Blue Rocks games at Frawley stadium.

Only 2 CASPIAN TERNS were found at Thousand Acre Marsh on Tuesday evening.
None were seen on the breakwaters at Battery Park in New Castle. There seems
to be fewer terns around this year. GREEN HERON, LITTLE BLUE HERON, and
CATTLE EGRETS were still being seen at Greer's Pond. Both BALD EAGLE and
OSPREY were along the canal, along with BANK SWALLOW and PURPLE MARTIN.
BARRED OWL and LEAST BITTERN were reported at Dragon Run.

A leuconistic BROWN-HEADED COWBIRD was seen AT FERRIS School in north
Wilmington today. An albino BARN SWALLOW was seen near Boondocks east of
Smyrna.

The previously reported SANDHILL CRANE continues to be seen in downtown
Elkton, Maryland. That bird is in Meadow Park along Maryland Rt. 7 (Delaware
Ave.), north of Rt. 40.

And now for the Birdline special feature from 1450 WILM News radio.

Bird names can be misleading. Often, birds are named by the first person to
describe the bird without a clue of the bird's true life history.

Our MOCKINGBIRD was recently renamed the NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD, even though
it's a bird of the Deep South. I remember Winston Wayne talking about seeing
the first MOCKINGBIRD in northern Delaware along Namann's Road back in the
1940's. Living up to their name, MOCKINGBIRDS are moving north.

Several warblers have very confusing names. CONNECTICUT WARBLER is rarely
seen in Connecticut, or anywhere else on the East Coast. CAPE MAY WARBLER is
not common in Cape May. PHILADELPHIA VIREO is not easy to find in
Philadelphia. Okay, PHILADELPHIA VIREO isn't a warbler, but it is misnamed.
TENNESSEE and NASHVILLE WARBLERS were both named in 1811 from birds taken
along the Cumberland River by Alexander Wilson. Both birds nest way to the
north and winter way to the south. Wilson must have been having a good time
in Nashville to name both species for where he was staying!

Two California birds are very confusing. The CALIFORNIA GULL is the state
bird of Utah. Why isn't it called the Utah gull? And, why would a state name
their state bird after a bird named for a different state. The CALIFORNIA
CONDOR use to be found only in California. But all the wild CONDORS were
captured for the endangered species breeding program. Now they are being
released into the Grand Canyon in Arizona, but you can't count them. They
are no longer considered wild birds. If they don't have proper papers will
they have to leave?

Special thanks to Sharon Lynn, Chris Bennett, Scott Baron, Lynn Smith, Ed
Sigda, Mike Bowen, Mike Moore, Frank Marenghi, Derek Stoner, Bill Stewart,
Andrew Bogush, Rod Murray, and Colin Campbell for their updates. Please call
your reports to 302-792-9591 or email to ednieap@verizon.net. Until next
week, good birding.
