For Friday, March 25th, this is Birdline Delaware from the Delaware Museum
of Natural History in Greenville. The Delaware State Year list increased to
175 species this week!
The first NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW of the year was reported today at
Augustine Beach Wildlife Area along route 9. There were also several TREE
SWALLOWS in the area. Along Route 9 between Augustine Beach and Woodland
Beach, a total of 6 AMERICAN KESTRELS were counted, as their migration is
getting started.
A YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT HERON was found in a Magnolia tree on the campus of
Delaware State University in Dover on Wednesday. This bird was apparent not
near water and easily approachable to within 5 meters.
A Glossy Ibis was reported at the Broadkill Beach impoundments of Prime Hook
NWR. Also reported at Broadkill Beach was a EURASIAN "COMMON" GREEN-WINGED
TEAL. This is the Old World subspecies, considered a separate species in
Europe.
A flock of 6 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS were found with a group of YELLOWLEGS at
the intersection of Cods and Prime Hook Beach Rd. An adult plumage LESSER
BLACK-BACKED GULL and FORSTER'S TERNS were also reported at Prime Hook
Beach. 6 MUTE SWANS were in the impoundment there. A pair of AMERICAN
OYSTERCATCHER was at Fowler's beach. HORNED GREBE was seen at the Mispillion
Inlet Nature Center. NORTHERN GANNETS were seen up the bay as far north as
the Slaughter's Beach fire Hall. SURF SCOTER, RED-BREASTED MERGANSER, and
AMERICAN WIGEON were also found at Slaughter's Beach.
A BLUE-WINGED TEAL was seen in Assawoman Wildlife Area near Fenwick Island
on Saturday. OSPREY and PINE WARBLERS were also reported there. EURASIAN
COLLARED DOVES are still being reported in Selbyville along Rt 54 and
Williams Rd. A MERLIN, unusual away from the coast was found out at Trap
Pond State Park near Laurel. Other species reported included EASTERN PHOEBE
and PINE WARBLERS, plus RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, BARRED OWL, and PILEATED
WOODPECKER. WILD TURKEYS were reported at Oak Grove near Seaford, where a
WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH still continues to come to a feeder there.
There were 5 COMMON EIDERS was among the Brant at the Harbor of Refuge
breakwater at Cape Henlopen State Park on Saturday. Also reported were 4
PIPING PLOVERS at "the Point" at the cape. The Cape Henlopen Hawk Watch
reported 6 COMMON EGRETS flying over on Sunday, plus WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS
and NORTHERN GANNETS. Land birds included FIELD SPARROW, and BROWN-HEADED
and RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH. The watch had good numbers of KESTRELS and OSPREY
this week, with a few BALD EAGLES.
HOODED MERGANSERS and PIED-BILLED GREBES were found on Griffith Lake in
Milford. WOOD DUCKS and PIED-BILLED GREBE were found at Killen's Pond, north
of Milford. Also seen there were COOPER'S HAWK, PLEATED WOODPECKER, BROWN
THRASHER, and CHIPPING SPARROW.
A SNOWY EGRET was found at the north pond at the Logan Tract. That pond is
full of NORTHERN SHOVELER right now, but there were also NORTHERN PINTAIL,
GADWALL, RING-NECKED DUCK and 3 PIED-BILLED GREBES. OSPREY, BALD EAGLE and
LAUGHING GULL were also seen flying over.
Bombay Hook NWR near Smyrna had 5 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERONS at Bear Swamp.
About 20 RING-NECKED DUCKS were also seen there. A half-dozen PIED-BILLED
GREBES along with AMERICAN COOT were on Shearness Pool. BOAT-TAILED GRACKLE
was call from the marsh. A dozen WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS continue to be seen
at the Visitor's Center. There were still 9 TUNDRA SWANS in the wheat field
opposite Whitehall Neck Rd on rt 9.
There was a flyover dark phase ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK seen in Bear this week. A
ROSS' GOOSE was picked out of a flock of SNOW GEESE passing over Middle Run
near Newark today. A BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE was also heard and photographed
there. Other birds included FOX SPARROW, EASTERN PHOEBE, AMERICAN KESTREL,
and flyover BALD EAGLES and DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT.
A RED-NECKED GREBE plus HORNED and PIED-BILLED GREBE were seen at Hoopes'
Reservoir last weekend. Yesterday, a changing plumage COMMON LOON was found
at the Hillside Mill cove. PILEATED WOODPECKER was also heard calling there.
Other waterfowl on the reservoir this week included WOOD DUCK, NORTHERN
SHOVELER, LESSER SCAUP, RING-NECKED DUCK, BUFFLEHEAD and COMMON MERGANSER.
The PEREGRINES in downtown Wilmington laid their fifth egg this week and are
now incubating. You can watch the nest on the Peregrine cam from the DOS web
site. You can also watch the nest box from the top of the parking garage
opposite the Brandywine Building in downtown Wilmington.
CHIPPING SPARROW was found this week at Mt Cuba along the Red Clay Creek. A
COMMON LOON was seen flying north over the valley yesterday. Ashland Nature
Center has a dozen PINE SISKINS coming to the feeders, plus COMMON
MERGANSER, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, and HERMIT THRUSH.
WHITE-BREASTED and RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES continue to come to a feeder in
Middletown. 10 WILD TURKEYS were seen in Blackbird State Forest below
Middletown. A RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH is also still coming to a feeder near
Felton.
A WILSON'S SNIPE was found at Grier's Pond along Dutch Neck Road. 55 GREAT
EGRETS were seen at dusk coming into the Pea Patch Island rookery from
Delaware City, along with a passing PEREGRINE FALCON. BALD EAGLES are
nesting on the south side of the Reedy Point Bridge, where OSPREY and
PEREGRINES were also seen. 2 MUTE SWANS were on Dragon Run, along with a hen
HOODED MERGANSER going into a nest box. About 200 TREE SWALLOWS were counted
over Dragon Run the same day.
