----------------------------
The female VERMILION FLYCATCHER at "Carter's Pond" south of Lakeland has
been seen numerous times over the past week by many birders from around
the state, through this morning, Feb. 27 (GB,BZ et al.); also seen at the
pond or in the vicinity by most has been up to 100 or more RUSTY
BLACKBIRDs; this morning, a few BREWER'S BLACKBIRDs were also seen at the
pond. Hundreds of Vesper and Savannah Sparrows were seen in a young pecan
plantation off of Carter Road NE of the pond. A few SANDHILL CRANEs have
been seen and heard in the vicinity, Feb. 21 (RT,EH) and Feb. 27 (GB et
al.).
The pond is a few miles south of Lakeland on SR 135; immediately after you
pass Johnson Rd. on your right (marked as CR 147 on the map, but not by
sign), the pond is on the left. The blackbird flock can be scoped from
alongside the road or from a dike along the SW side of the pond; the VEFL
has mostly been perched atop a small cypress just past a group of large
cypress as you walk down the SW dike, more than halfway to the dam and
past the second gate; however, this morning it was found much closer to
the highway. DeLorme Atlas p. 60, H1.
Other Lakeland-area sites where RUSTY BLACKBIRDs have been seen include
ca. 40 in a pecan grove along a sod farm just off (SE) of US-221, NE of
Monk's Pond (KA,BB) and 2 at the Old State Rd. crossing of Grand Bay Creek
W of 135 (JF; DeLorme p.68,A1).
On Feb. 26 at a site in south-central Lowndes Co., ca. 100 RUSTY
BLACKBIRDs were seen just S of Lake Park on US-41, 0.1 mi onto Wisenbaker
Rd. (KA); also just S of Lake Park on Zeigler Rd., a first-of-season
NORTHERN PARULA was heard on the 26th (KA).
On Feb. 25, a BROWN CREEPER was seen in a good mixed forest flock at the
entrance to Lake Louise (look for "Property of VSU Foundation" sign) off
Touchton Rd., 0.3 mi W of Loch Laurel Rd., about 3 miles S of the Valdosta
airport; from Ga-31 S of Valdosta bear left onto Loch Laurel just in front
of the gas station south of the airport (KA).
We have recent reports of 2 (as of yet unidentified) hummingbirds visiting
a feeder near Jo-Ree Mill Pond in Valdosta; one of these has apparently
been around for much of the winter (fide JS).
