This is a Rare Bird Update for the Northwest Florida/ South Alabama for the
week of Oct.24, 2000 This hotline is sponsored by the Francis M. Weston

OCTOBER 21, SAturday- Ft. Pickens, Pensacola Beach, Fl.
At Ft. Pickens today 50 species were sighted including PINE, BLACK/WHITE,
HOODED, MAGNOLIA, YELLOW-RUMPED, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, PAMERICAN REDSTART
WARBLERS.
HOUSE WRENS and BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHERS were around. (Hud Huddleston)
Navarre Beach Fl.
At the east end of Navarre Beach we had several NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED ,
(1) LECONTE'S, (1) FIELD SPARROWS., . Also several MARSH WRENS .(Hud
Huddleston)
Dauphin Island, Al.
A SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER was spotted on the wires
near the marina just south of the DI bridge (Betsy Eagar )
Ft. Morgan, Al.
Many hawks were seen kettling above the point included were NORTHERN
HERRIER (1), SHARP-SHINNED (5), COOPER'S(5) RED-SHOULDERED(1), BROAD-WINGED
(4) , RED-TAILED (1) , KESTRAL (MANY), and MERLIN (2). (Peggy Baker)
OCTOBER 22- Sunday- Pensacola Beach, Fl. and Ft. Pickens
Five (5) WHITE-WINGED DOVE were seen at the corner of Corto Ave. and Rio
Vista Dr. on Pensacola Beach. They can be seen under the bird feeder in
the front yard of the house on the corner. (Steve Luppert)
GRAY CATBIRDS were numerous at Ft. Pickens in all areas of the park.
Migrating warblers were mostly one of each. These included: CHESTNUT
SIDED, MAGNOLIA, PINE, BLACK AND WHITE, BLACK THROATED GREEN,, HOODED, PALM
and AMERICAN REDSTART.. EASTERN WOOD PEEWEE and EASTERN PHOEBE were
present with 5 of each species. (Peggy Baker)
Fort Walton Beach , Fl .Spray Fields
At Ft. Walton Beach Spray Field these birds were seen
Highlights (each seen by at least two of us, usually all four) included:
SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER - 2, one with a moderately long tail, the other
with a shorter tail, both washed with salmon color underneath
VERMILLION FLYCATCHER - 1 immature male, bright red belly
DICKCISSEL - 1, flushed from the fence around the tank (pool, pond, or
whatever these artificial bodies of water are called), it circled twice
overhead before flying east
WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW - 1 immature, along the same fence
CLAY-COLORED SPARROW - 1, along the eastern boundary of the spray field
(with many Indigo Buntings)
PEREGRINE FALCON - 1 dark immature, on the powerline just outside the
northern boundary
COOPER'S HAWK - 1, flew across Roberts Blvd. from the eastern boundary
N. HARRIER - 1
EARED GREBE - 1
WILSON'S WARBLER (of course) - 1, along the eastern boundary
other Warblers:
NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH - 2, one IN the corral along Roberts Blvd.
BLACK-THROATED GREEN - 3
YELLOW - 2
YELLOW-THROATED - 1
MAGNOLIA - 9
CHESTNUT-SIDED - 1
TENNESSEE - 4
AMERICAN REDSTART - 3
YELLOW-RUMPED - 5
COMMON YELLOWTHROAT - 8
PALM - many, like the Indigos they were everywhere
Did not see the Lark Sparrow or the Cassin's
Kingbird

OCTOBER 23- Monday, Mobile, Al. Causeway, west of Spanish Fort, Al.
A ROSEATE SPOONBILL was seen in a Cypress tree on the north side of the
Mobile Causeway just east of Spanish Fort, Al. (John Porter)
Gulf Breeze, Fl
Had a trickle of migrants thru the yard IN Tiger Point this morning. A few
each, RB
GROSBEAK, TENNESSEE WARBLER. and AMERICAN REDSTART. (Ed Case)
OCTOBER 24- Tuesday, Magnolia Springs , Al., Landfill
At the ponds at the entrance to the Magnolia Springs Landfill, a f.
RINGED-NECK DUCK was seen along with a SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER and a STILT
SANDPIPER. (Lucy Duncan)
