This is the southeast Idaho bird report brought to you by the Idaho=20
Museum of Natural History. This alert was updated on Monday March=20
27th. Birds noted for this week are as follows:=20
Snow Geese, Tundra Swans, Eurasian Wigeons, Long-tailed Duck, =
American White Pelicans, Sandhill Cranes, American Avocets, Burrowing =
Owl, American Tree Sparrows, Golden-crowned Sparrow, White-throated =
Sparrow, Lesser Goldfinch, Cassin's Finches
=20
There is a huge flock of between 30- and 50,000 Snow Geese =
resting on the east=20
side of Mud Lake WMA and foraging in fields to the east. There are =
also several flocks of Tundra Swans, several Bald Eagles, and Sandhill =
Cranes are calling and flying in this area. A colony of about 30 Great =
Blue Herons are on nests along the southeast edge of the lake. To get =
there drive west on US 33 about 7 miles from Sage Junction, which is =
about 20 miles north of Idaho Falls on I-15. Follow the signs to the =
north for about 4 miles out to the lake. Just after entering the =
Wildlife Management Area, take a dirt road to the left and walk up to =
the dike along the eastern edge for a good view of=20
the geese. This is near B-1 on page 40 of the Idaho DeLorme atlas.=20
A single Burrowing Owl was seen on the east side of I-15 near =
the underpass about two miles north of Sage Junction. You can also get =
to this area from the frontage road to Hamer that runs parallel east of =
the freeway.=20
At Camas NWR a male Eurasian Wigeon was spotted last week with a =
small flock of American Wigeons. To find it drive out on the dike =
road=20
south from the headquarters to a "T", take a left and look in the =
open water to the north. Another male Eurasian Wigeon was spotted =
Saturday on pond #3 at Market Lake WMA, and yet another was seen today =
at Seagull Bay, east of American Falls. There were also 20 White =
Pelicans and many American Tree Sparrows on the Camas Refuge, and =
Franklin's Gulls were seen there too this past weekend. To get to this =
refuge get off I-15 at Hamer, drive 3 miles north on the frontage road, =
then cross over the freeway and follow the signs for about two miles =
west to the headquarters.
At the Fish and Game fish hatchery on the north side of the =
Snake River across from American Falls there are still an adult =
White-throated Sparrow and a juvenile Golden-crowned Sparrow visiting =
the bird feeders near station 10 on the nature trail through the Russian =
olives. A single Lesser Goldfinch is in a large flock of American =
Goldfinches at the feeder too. To get there drive across the dam, take =
an immediate left, then left again and follow the signs down to the =
hatchery. The nature trail is on the east side of the hatchery. A =
Long-tailed Duck (or Oldsquaw) has been present for at least a week on =
the Snake River below the boat dock at the west end of massacre Rocks =
State Park.
Two American Avocets were spotted at the south end of Swan Lake this =
weekend, as well as many diving ducks and Tundra Swans. This is near =
B-2.5 on page 22 of the Idaho atlas, which is off US 91, south of =
Downey.
Finally, Cassin's Finches were singing in Douglas firs on Scout =
Mountain yesterday. This area is about 12 miles south of Pocatello on =
the East Fork of Mink Creek Road. Also two males were at a feeder on =
the west side of Pocatello. For further information or to report a bird =
sighting you can call Chuck Trost at 236-3337, or you can call him at =
home at 233-4538.=20
