This is the Chicago Audubon Society bird report for Wednesday, March
12, 2008 at noon.
A HARRIS'S SPARROW found March 9th at the Enabling Garden in the
Chicago Botanic Gardens was still there on March 11th. Thirty COMMON
REDPOLLS were also still at the Botanic Gardens on March 9th.
Three ROSS'S GEESE has been seen the last week along Lake Michigan at
several areas, which include the Lincoln Park [Jarvis] Bird
Sanctuary, Montrose Harbor, the soccer field at Foster, the baseball
field at Wilson Avenue, and on the grass at Diversey Harbor. Both
LESSER BLACK-BACKED and GLAUCOUS GULLS were at Montrose Harbor on March 8th.
One ROSS'S GOOSE was in Grant Park from March 7th through 9th near
the Petrillo band shell.
Two ROSS'S GEESE were in Garfield Park on March 9th.
Sixteen ROSS'S GEESE were at the Buffalo Wallow at Fermilab on March
8th and 9th along with several WHITE-FRONTED GEESE. Eleven ROSS'S
GEESE were still there on the 10th.
Seen at the North Point Marina on March 8th were 26 WHITE-WINGED, one
BLACK, and one SURF SCOTER, along with six ICELAND, 10 THAYER'S, two
GLAUCOUS, and two LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS. Also at Winthrop
Harbor's North Point Marina yesterday were 24 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS,
SURF SCOTER, LONG-TAILED DUCK, and LESSER BLACK-BACKED, GLAUCOUS, and
ICELAND GULLS.
Other WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS were seen this week at Montrose, the
Jarvis Bird Sanctuary, and Waukegan Harbor.
A male HARLEQUIN DUCK was seen March 1st off the Chess Pavilion near
North Avenue Beach.
A PILEATED WOODPECKER was seen March 9th at Palos Park Woods North Grove #1.
An early EASTERN PHOEBE was at Whalon Lake Forest Preserve on March 8th.
A EUROPEAN GOLDFINCH was seen March 7th at a feeder in Wonder Lake.
Two TRUMPETER SWANS were seen last week at Lake Katherine in Palos Heights.
NORTHERN SHRIKES were seen recently at the North Unit of Illinois
Beach State Park, in Beach Park at the intersection of Lewis and
Wadsworth, at North Point Marina, at the Glenview Prairie, at Lake
Calumet, Greene Valley Forest Preserve, and at Buffalo Grove Forest Preserve.
A VARIED THRUSH was seen in Winnetka on March 4th and 6th.
