On June 12th, a PILEATED WOODPECKER was seen along the Des Plaines Riverway.
DIRECTIONS: Go to the intersection of Route 83 and 91st St. It is a
little more than a mile south of the junction of Route 83 and I-55.
Turn east on 91st and go half a mile to Madison. Turn south and follow
Madison for about a mile. After crossing the railroad tracks look for a
road on the left about a half-block past the tracks with a sign
announcing the sewage treatment plant. Turn on this road and then when
it ends a short distance later turn south onto the gravel road. This
road ends about a block later at the Des Plaines River where there is
a parking loop and an old boat ramp. The bird was seen about 100 meters
east of the parking area near the river.
On June 11 at Waterfall Glen, YELLOW-BREASTED CHATS were seen in the
area east and a little north of the model airplane field. A HOODED
WARBLER was heard near the Bluff Road parking lot. A BARRED OWL
was also heard once west of the parking lot.
Recent Sightings at the Morton Arboretum include YELLOW-THROATED
WARBLERS near P-23, the dam near P-24, P-25, and on the east side north
of P-2. A female SUMMER TANAGER was also seen on the Heritage Trail
(Big Rock Station area). Other birds at that location included
BOBOLINK, DICKCISSEL, ans SEDGE WREN.
At Pratt's Wayne Woods, one or two pairs of COMMON MOORHENS continue to
be seen at the marsh at the corner of Powis Rd. and Sterns.
HENSLOW'S SPARROWS continue to be seen in various locations along Munger
Rd. at the Dog Training Field, and the Equestrian Field.
At Tri-County State Park at the marsh north of the parking lot (where
the Great Blue Herons are nesting), at least two COMMON MOORHENS
continue to be seen (although not reliably). YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDS
have also been seen very regularly in the morning and evening. Other
sightings included MUTE SWAN, SANDHILL CRANE, PIED-BILLED GREBE, and
BLUE-WINGED TEAL. DICKCISSELS continue to be seen near the parking lot
and ORCHARD ORIOLES are being seen along the trail between the bridge
and the parking lot.
At Herrick Lake on June 9th, a BLUE-WINGED WARBLER was seen where the
Meadowlark Trail emerges from the woods after it passes the golf course.
Two HOODED WARBLERS were also seen in this area earlier in the week.
Other highlights include WHITE-EYED VIREOS, YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, 9
SEDGE WRENS, 10 WILLOW FLYCATCHERS, WOOD THRUSH, OVENBIRD, ORCHARD
ORIOLE, SCARLET TANAGER, EASTERN TOWHEE, ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK, and
YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO.
On June 4th at Greene Valley, birds seen around the landfill hill
included DICKCISSELS, BOBOLINKS, SAVANNAH SPARROWS, and GRASSHOPPER
SPARROWS. A BELL'S VIREO was also seen at the Thunderbird Youth Camp
near site 7 and an ALDER FLYCATCHER was heard near site 8.
On June 4th at West Chicago Prairie, a flyover OSPREY was seen.
Other birds included 2 YELLOW-BREASTED CHATS and BELL'S VIREOS.
BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS have been seen sporadically this week at
Pratt's Wayne Woods, Tri-County State Park, Timber Ridge, and Elsen's Hill.
Two male RING-NECKED DUCKS continue to be present in a pond south of
103rd street and west of Woodward Avenue in the southern part of
Woodridge.
____ KANE COUNTY ______________________________________
On June 3rd, a pair of BARRED OWLS was seen at Big Rock F.P.
At Nelson Lake Marsh (Dick Young F.P.) on June 3rd, a pair of VIRGINIA
RAILS with chicks was seen.
A BROAD-WINGED HAWK was seen at Jon J. Duerr F.P. (Blackhawk) on June
9th. GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHERS and BALTIMORE ORIOLES also continue to
be seen.
At Tekakwitha Woods, a HOODED WARBLER was present in the vicinity of the
outdoor meeting area with natural log benches near the nature center.
____ FERMILAB SIGHTINGS ________________________________
On June 9th, a PEREGRINE FALCON was seen hunting over the grasslands
along Eola Road.

Saturday, June 17, 7:00 a.m. Springbrook Prairie F.P.
Target birds are prairie species such as Bobolink, Sedge Wren, and
Henslow's Sparrow. The trip will be led by the steward of Springbrook
Prairie. Meet in the new parking lot on the north side of 83rd St., just
west of Book Rd. Take 75th St. to Book Rd., which is between IL-59 and
Naperville-Plainfield Rd. in Naperville.

Sunday, June 18, 7:00 a.m. Orland Prairie (Cook Co. F.P.).
Henslow's and Grasshopper Sparrows, raptors, and other grassland
nesters. Meet in parking lot on south side of 167th St., just west of
US-45 (LaGrange Rd) in Orland Park.

Saturday, June 24, 7:00 a.m. Marengo Ridge F.P. (McHenry Co.).
Late migrants and residents in mixed habitats of hardwood trees, pines,
and prairie on the highest point in northern Illinois. Take I-90
northwest, exit US-20 northwest (left as you come off the ramp) towards
Marengo. In Marengo turn north on IL-23, proceed a few miles north until
the top of the ridge, turn east into Marengo Ridge F.P. Meet in the
first parking lot on the left.
