____ DUPAGE COUNTY ______________________________________

A PILEATED WOODPECKER was spotted again at the Des Plaines Riverway F.P.
on June 25th. It was initially seen near the heron rookery on the
south side of the river about 200 meters past the stream that empties
into the Des Plaines River and. The bird was working on one of the
large dead trees right along the river. At least five or six
PROTHONOTARY WARBLERS are also present along the river along with
breeding BROWN CREEPERS. On June 27, a flyby NORTHERN HARRIER and 3
PURPLE MARTINS were also seen.

DIRECTIONS: Go to the intersection of Route 83 and 91st St. It is a
little more than a mile south of the junction of Route 83 and I-55.
Turn east on 91st and go half a mile to Madison. Turn south and follow
Madison for about a mile. After crossing the railroad tracks look for a
road on the left about a half-block past the tracks with a sign
announcing the sewage treatment plant. Turn on this road and then when
it ends a short distance later turn south onto the gravel road. This
road ends about a block later at the Des Plaines River where there is
a parking loop and an old boat ramp. Walk east along the river to the
creek. Note that the water level can change quickly after a rain and at
times it is difficult to walk this area without waders. The creek can
also be crossed when the water isn't too high.

On June 23rd at Waterfall Glen, an ACADIAN FLYCATCHER was present in the
woods east of the main trail just north of the new west side parking lot
off of Lemont Rd. At Poverty Prairie, 3 HENSLOW'S SPARROWS were seen
along with other expected grassland birds. At the overlook pavilion on
the south side of the preserve(roughly one mile from the east end of
Poverty Prairie on the main trail), three OSPREYS were seen landing in a
tree on the south side of the Des Plaines River. A 2nd or 3rd year BALD
EAGLE was also seen along the river.

At Waterfall Glen on June 13, birds seen in the SW corner of the
preserve included YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT, BLUE-WINGED WARBLER, and
CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER. The HOODED WARBLER was also still present on
the west edge of the public parking lot behind the ranger's residence on
the south side of Bluff Rd east of Cass Ave. A PINE WARBLER was also
heard across from the ranger's residence. Two flyover BROAD-WINGED
HAWKS were also seen.

On June 25 & 26 at Tri-County S.P., three LEAST BITTERNS were heard at
the heron rookery marsh. A couple YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDS also
continue to be seen here as well as COMMON MOORHEN.

At Pratt's Wayne Woods on June 26, birds at the marsh at the corner of
Powis and Sterns Rd. included a COMMON MOORHEN, PIED-BILLED GREBES, WOOD
DUCKS, and 4 AMERICAN KESTRELS. A flyby AMERICAN WOODCOCK was also seen
as well as a BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON. At least 10 HENSLOW'S SPARROWS
were also heard near the dog training area late in the evening.

At Oldfield Oaks F.P. on June 28, a male SUMMER TANAGER was seen along
the west end of the trail loop where it parallels Lemont Rd. A pair of
CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLERS and 3 SCARLET TANAGERS were also seen.

Last week at Winfield Mounds, a CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER and a
YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT were seen along the path that leads back to the
mounds. (east down the bike path to its end at the river, then a right
down the trail to the small open field).

On June 17th at Springbrook Prairie, highlights included a YELLOW-BILLED
CUCKOO, HENSLOW'S SPARROWS, many BOBOLINKS, SEDGE WREN, and DICKCISSEL.
On June 27th, a flyover CASPIAN TERN and a female AMERICAN REDSTART
were seen near the old dog training field parking lot on the east side
of Naperville-Plainfield Road.

An ALDER FLYCATCHER is still being seen / heard at the N.E. corner of
Warrenville Grove F.P. (west of Winfield Rd. on Batavia Rd. south of RT.
56).

Two male RING-NECKED DUCKS are still being seen at the pond south of
103rd and Woodward in Woodridge on June 24.

On June 27 at Greene Valley, a BELL'S VIREO was heard near the parking
area for campsite 7 in the Thunderbird Campground area. A CHESTNUT-SIDED
WARBLER was also seen in the area north of the trailhead where the main
trail and the short-cut intersect (approx 0.3 mi.).

____ FERMILAB SIGHTINGS ________________________________

On June 18th, a lot of HENSLOW'S SPARROWS were present in the south Eola
Rd. grasslands. Both BELL'S VIREOS and ORCHARD ORIOLES were seen in the
sparrow hedge area. A juvenile HOODED MERGANSER was also seen on the
main ring moat (restricted area).

ANNETTE PRINCE - CHICAGO BIRD COLLISION MONITORS
It is estimated that more than a billion birds die or are injured each
year from building collisions. Volunteers with CBCM rescue injured
birds, collect and document fatalities, and work with building owners to
reduce lighting during spring and fall migration. Join us for an
evening learning about this exciting initiative and also how you can
prevent bird collisions at home.

All are also invited to come meet the speaker and join us for dinner at
5:30 pm at the Beijing Restaurant, 404 Roosevelt Road, Glen Ellyn (two
blocks west of Main Street on the north side of the road).

Visitors are always welcome to attend!
