Welcome to the Arkansas Rare Bird Alert for December 28, 2009, sponsored by the
Audubon Society of Central Arkansas (ASCA). ASCA meets at 7:00pm the second
Thursday of each month. The next meeting will be the annual planning meeting.
Check the www.ascabird.org website for details on upcoming meetings and field
trips. Sign up for the Christmas Bird Count, too!

From around the state recent sightings are:

An adult male WHITE-WINGED SCOTER has been seen on Lake Dardanelle with a large
group of scaup just north of Delaware Rec Area.

On Lake Conway along US-89 five Common Goldeneyes were near the docks on
Shoreline Dr.

Overflow National Wildlife Refuge has about 600 immature White Ibis on the
refuge.

On agri lands less than a mile south of the Galloway exit and a large (a few
hundred total) mixed flock of American Pipits and Horned Larks was found. One
(possibly two) LAPLAND LONGSPURs were seen/heard as well. The location is found
as follows: Take 391 south from I-40. Cross the bayou (towards the Gardens)
and go about 100 yards and pull off at the asphalt pad on the right.

A Blue-Gray Gnatcatcher and Lapland Longspurs were seen at Stuttgart Airport.
Please sign in at the registry and review the guidelines for birding before
birding the airport.

Trumpeter Swans have started arriving for the winter at Lake Magness near Heber
Springs. For ABA listers, these are countable birds, since they are not
released/introduced birds and are part of an established migratory population.

Thanks for calling the Arkansas Rare Bird Alert. Your contributions make the
Rare Bird Aert possible. If you would like to leave a message, please wait for
the chirp. Good Birding!
