Welcome to the Kansas Statewide Rare Bird Alert compiled by the Kansas
Ornithological Society. This report was prepared on Tuesday, December 29.

Transcriber's Note: Birds listed in ALL CAPS in the Species Mentioned
section signify that the Revised Checklist of Kansas  Birds lists them as
Occasional, Accidental, Extirpated, or never having occurred before for the
season being reported.


Recent sightings from around the state include:


One young GLAUCOUS GULL was observed at Fall River Lake in Greenwood County
on December 22.

Four TUNDRA SWANS and one EASTERN PHOEBE were recorded on the Sawyer
Christmas Bird Count on December 22.   

The hardy Larned WESTERN TANAGER was a casualty of the harsh winter storm
and she was collected December 24.

A single SNOW BUNTING was observed near Phillipsburg on December 25.
The Cimarron National Grasslands and Junction City CBCs were conducted on
December 27. The Cimarron National Grasslands count recorded one GRAY
CATBIRD and one CANYON TOWHEE while the Junction City count recorded one
BROWN THRASHER and two CHESTNUT-COLLARED LONGSPURS.

One ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was observed in Douglas County in northeastern Kansas
on December 28.
