Welcome to the Arkansas Rare Bird Alert for January 31, 2010, sponsored by the
Audubon Society of Central Arkansas (ASCA). ASCA meets at 7:00pm the second
Thursday of each month. Check the www.ascabird.org website for details on
upcoming meetings and field trips.
From around the state recent sightings are:
A Spotted Towhee has been in a Little Rock neighborhood recently. Please call
Larry or Desiree Witherspoon if you would like to arrange a visit to the
Witherspoon home to see the bird at 501-603-0016 or 501 681-1097.
A Tundra Swan is being seen near West Memphis. Just west of West Memphis, AR,
I-40 Exit #271/Hwy 147, about 100 feet north of the exit on Hwy 147, there is an
unmarked road to the right
(Google maps calls it "Bolling Ln", but there may not be a sign). The road runs
parallel to the interstate. Go back east on that road about a mile and there are
several flooded fields just north of the
road that are full of ducks--mostly Pintails and NorthernShovelers. The last
flooded field before you come to a bridge and some buildings has a small duck
blind in it about 100 yards from the road. This is the flooded field where the
swan has been seen recently.
An adult male Rufous Hummingbird being seen at the Streett home in the Hillcrest
neighborhood in Little Rock.was recaptured and confirmed as being already
banded. The band tells us this bird was originally banded on January 12, 2009
in Louisiana north of New Orleans. At the time it was a second year bird.
It has returned to the feeder since recapture. Rufous Hummingbirds have also
been observed at two other homes in Little Rock this season.
At Stuttgart Airport, 2 Sedge Wrens and 2 Le Conte’s Sparrows were reported.
At Warren Prairie Natural Area several each of Henslow's Sparrow and Le Conte's
Sparrow were reported.
A Pacific Loon is being seen on the north side and near the end of the Caddo
Peninsula at De Gray Lake.
The Lake Maumelle Red-throated Loon continues at the same location about a mile
east on AR-10 from the west end of the lake. A scope is essential. Park at west
end of bridge and follow use trail to point.
A female Long-tailed Duck (out from the picnic area off Hwy 10) was seen on Lake
Maumelle, in addition to around 20 Common Loons and 50 Greater Scaup.
Two trumpeter swans are reported in a roadside pond 1 mile west of Waldron. They
are 1 mile west of the school on highway 80 on the left side of the road. They
have no neck or leg bands.
Trumpeter Swans are at Lake Magness near Heber Springs for the winter. For ABA
listers, these are countable birds, since they are not released/introduced birds
and are part of an established migratory population.
Thanks for calling the Arkansas Rare Bird Alert. Your contributions make the
Rare Bird Aert possible. If you would like to leave a message, please wait for
the chirp. Good Birding!
