Welcome to the Kansas Statewide Rare Bird Alert compiled by the Kansas
Ornithological Society. This report was prepared on Saturday, March 20.

Recent sightings from around the state include:

As many as eleven swans have been observed at Quivira National Wildlife
Refuge recently, including both TUNDRA SWANS and TRUMPETER SWANS.

One WHOOPING CRANE was observed within a large flock of Sandhill Cranes at
Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Area on March 18.

One AMERICAN BLACK DUCK was observed at Quivira National Wildlife Refuge on
March 14.

A first winter GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL was observed at Cheyenne Bottoms
Wildlife Area on March 13.

A NORTHERN SHRIKE was observed in a Manhattan backyard on March 12.

A WHITE-WINGED DOVE was coming to feeders in Mulvane from March 7-12.

Some spring arrivals have occurred in Kansas early, including a GRAY CATBIRD
in Wichita on March 9, CHIPPING SPARROWS at Quivira National Wildlife Refuge
and a HOUSE WREN in Manhattan on March 10.
