This is the Kentucky rare bird alert, sponsored by the Kentucky
Ornithological Society. This update is current as of December 4, 2006
at 11:00 AM EDT. This is a summary of the sightings posted at
http://www.biology.eku.edu/kos.htm , with additional information on the
location and/or dates of the rare and unusual. The highlights of this
update are:
3 GOLDEN EAGLES were counted at the Bernheim Forest area outside
Bardstown on Sunday the 3rd. This is now a regular wintering spot for
them.
A number of SHORT-EARED OWLS have been noted just before dusk on
different occasions in the Peabody WMA. The latest included 10
individuals, with several giving chase after a Northern Harrier.
50 COMMON LOONS were tallied at Barren River Reservoir on Dec. 1st.
A single ROSS'S GOOSE was observed on the Homestead unit of Peabody WMA
on November the 25th.
A female WHITE-WINGED SCOTER was seen at Eva Bandman Park on River Road
in Louisville on the 29th. There was also word of a female WHITE-WINGED
SCOTER being shot in Henderson on the Ohio River.
Way back on the 15th, 6 SURF SCOTER were counted ant Barren River.
492 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS were counted on a sand bar at Kuttawa for
which I have lost the date. This is on Lake Barkley.
Totals on a fish and wildlife waterfowl count flight over Sauerheber
unit of the Henderson sloughs included 13 TUNDRA SWANS, 1000
GREATER-WHITE FRONTED GEESE, and 2000 GADWALL..
A first winter FRANKLIN'S GULL was seen with a number of BONAPARTE'S
GULLS at Fishing Creek recreation area in Pulaski County on the 1st of
December.
Lastly, a number of sightings of MERLIN and flocks of SANDHILL CRANE
were reported from across the state during the week.
