EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS
This is the Voice of Audubon for Friday, June 19.
The prevalence of easterly winds during the last two weeks has
produced some
of the season's first significant seabird counts from various coastal
sea watches.
Seen this morning at Tuckernuck Island were 150 CORY'S SHEARWATERS,
roughly 1000 GREATER SHEARWATERS, 1000 SOOTY SHEARWATERS,
7 MANX SHEARWATERS, 1 NORTHERN FULMAR, 1 LEACH'S STORM-
PETREL, 500 WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS, 50 NORTHERN GANNETS,
6 SOUTH POLAR SKUAS, 6 POMARINE JAEGERS, 1 unidentified jaeger,
20 ARCTIC TERNS, and 2 ATLANTIC PUFFINS. Meanwhile, seen from
Nantucket today were 2 RED-THROATED LOONS, 660 GREATER SHEAR-
WATERS, roughly 200 CORY'S SHEARWATERS, 170 SOOTY SHEAR-
WATERS, 4 MANX SHEARWATERS, 400 WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS,
1 LEACH'S STORM-PETREL, and 1 PARASITIC JAEGER.
A sea watch on Monday between Provincetown and Truro produced 80
GREATER SHEARWATERS, 2 SOOTY SHEARWATERS, 550 WILSON'S
STORM-PETRELS, 3 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS, 1 ICELAND
GULL, and 8 PARASITIC JAEGERS, a check of the same spots on Tuesday
yielded 90 GREATER SHEARWATERS, 8 SOOTY SHEARWATERS, 120
WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS, 340 NORTHERN GANNETS, and 2
PARASITIC JAEGERS, and a third check yesterday produced 300 GREATER
SHEARWATERS, 6 SOOTY SHEARWATERS, 2 MANX SHEARWATERS,
500 unidentified large shearwaters, roughly 1000 WILSON'S STORM-
PETRELS, 1 BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE, and 2 PARASITIC JAEGERS.
Seen yesterday from Gloucester were a RED-THROATED LOON, 40
GREATER SHEARWATERS, and 200 WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS.
At the Belle Isle marsh in East Boston there were 3 AMERICAN
WOODCOCKS, 2 WILLOW FLYCATCHERS, 4 SALTMARSH
SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS, and 2 ORCHARD ORIOLES, and
miscellaneous reports this week have included 1 SNOW GOOSE and 1
LEAST BITTERN at Plum Island, 8 MANX SHEARWATERS at Revere
Beach, 5 GREAT CORMORANTS at Graves Light at the entrance to
Boston Harbor, a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW at Post Office Square
in Boston, a YELLOW-THROATED VIREO at the Chestnut Hill
Reservoir in Boston, an ALDER FLYCATCHER in Arlington, and 9
GLOSSY IBISES in Plymouth.
