EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS
This is the Voice of Audubon for Monday, February 22.
The MEW GULL that has been present in East Gloucester most of the
winter
was seen again yesterday at Niles Pond in East Gloucester, the TUFTED
DUCK
was still present on the Sudbury River north of the Rt. 27 bridge in
Wayland
and Sudbury, and a second TUFTED DUCK was reported on Saturday from
the Charles River at the Newton Street bridge in Waltham.
Other reports from Waltham included 18 RING-NECKED DUCKS, 1 LESSER
SCAUP, 1 TURKEY VULTURE, 1 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, 2
COMMON GRACKLES, and several RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS, and
other birds seen along the Sudbury River between Wayland and Sudbury
included 25 RING-NECKED DUCKS, 4 COMMON GOLDENEYES, 8
HOODED MERGANSERS, 18 COMMON MERGANSERS, 2 BALD
EAGLES, 2 NORTHERN SHRIKES, 1 COMMON RAVEN, and 4 RED-
WINGED BLACKBIRDS.
Weekend reports from the Newburyport/Plum Island area included 3
NORTHERN PINTAILS, 1 BARROW'S GOLDENEYE, 3 BALD EAGLES,
1 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, 1 BLACK-HEADED GULL, 20 RAZOR-
BILLS, 2 SNOWY OWLS, 1 SHORT-EARED OWL, and 12 RED-WINGED
BLACKBIRDS, and seen in Rockport were 2 BRANT, 40 HARLEQUIN
DUCKS, 2 TURKEY VULTURES, 1 PEREGRINE FALCON, 100 PURPLE
SANDPIPERS, 21 RAZORBILLS, an EASTERN TOWHEE, 1 RED-
WINGED BLACKBIRD, and 1 COMMON GRACKLE.
Reports from Nantucket included 1 KING EIDER, 12 HARLEQUIN DUCKS,
7 TURKEY VULTURES, 1 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, 51 AMERICAN
COOTS, and 45 RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS, and miscellaneous reports
from the weekend included a BARROW'S GOLDENEYE and a MERLIN
in Salisbury, a KING EIDER and 5 BLACK GUILLEMOTS in Gloucester,
another KING EIDER in Rockport, 40 COMMON GRACKLES in Reading,
a EURASIAN GREEN-WINGED TEAL and 2 BALD EAGLES in Newton,
2 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS and 35 COMMON GRACKLES in Wayland,
and 1 COMMON RAVEN in Quincy.
On Saturday, March 6, Mass Audubon and the Manomet Center for
Conservation
Sciences will cosponsor the 18th annual Massachusetts Birders
Meeting.
