EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS
This is the Voice of Audubon for Friday, August 13.
Birders looking for shorebirds over the weekend should expect to see
increasing
numbers of Black-bellied Plovers, White-rumped Sandpipers, Pectoral
Sandpipers,
and the first Long-billed Dowitchers of the season. Birders are
also encouraged
to be on the lookout for color-banded shorebirds since the careful
documentation
of leg-banded shorebirds is of considerable value to shorebird
researchers. For
information on what to do if you see a color-banded shorebird, see
<http://www.bandedbirds.org/>http://www.bandedbirds.org/ In addition
to shorebirds, this is the season to
increasingly be on the lookout for Common Nighthawks migrating
overhead
during late afternoon and dusk. It's also time to start watching for
early
migrating songbirds in coastal thickets and other appropriate areas.
A SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER that has been present at Sandy Point
State Park at the south end of Plum Island for nearly two weeks was
still present
as recently as Thursday. Other reports from Plum Island included a
YELLOW-
CROWNED NIGHT-HERON and a MARBLED GODWIT. A recent banding
report from the Joppa Flats bird-banding station located at the
Parker River
Wildlife Refuge on Plum Island included a SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, a
WOOD THRUSH, a BLUE-WINGED WARBLER, 14 YELLOW WARBLERS,
2 BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLERS, 10 AMERICAN REDSTARTS, an
OVENBIRD, 24 COMMON YELLOWTHROATS, and 6 BALTIMORE
ORIOLES.
Shorebirds tallied at South Beach in Chatham this week included 400
BLACK-
BELLIED PLOVERS, 2000 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 14 AMERICAN
OYSTERCATCHERS, 200 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 45 WILLETS, 15
WHIMBRELS, 60 HUDSONIAN GODWITS, 5 MARBLED GODWITS, 75
RUDDY TURNSTONES, 100 RED KNOTS, 300 SANDERLINGS, 4000
SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, and 800 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS,
as well as hundreds of ROSEATE TERNS. On the flats off Tern Island
in
North Chatham 100 WILLETS and 2500 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS
were counted, and on Monday, a BAR-TAILED GODWIT was observed on
nearby North Beach Island.
At the Glades in North Scituate last weekend there was a
RED-SHOULDERED
HAWK, a GREAT HORNED OWL, 5 BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHERS, a
YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, 3 RED-EYED VIREOS, a NORTHERN
PARULA, 2 PRAIRIE WARBLERS, a BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER,
and an AMERICAN REDSTART.
In Pembroke this week there were 8 GREAT EGRETS, 10 SEMIPALMATED
PLOVERS, 15 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 3 SOLITARY SANDPIPERS,
40 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, 30 LEAST SANDPIPERS, 8
PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, and 1 STILT SANDPIPER.
Miscellaneous reports included a possible sighting of a BROWN PELICAN
at
Lake Assawompsett in Lakeville; a GREAT EGRET, 14 SOLITARY SAND-
PIPERS, and 4 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS in Sterling; 6 YELLOW-
CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS leaving a roost at Hemenway Landing in
Eastham, a HUDSONIAN GODWIT in Newburyport; a WILSON'S
PHALAROPE at Belle Isle in East Boston; 130 BONAPARTE'S GULLS
