EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS
This is the Voice of Audubon for Monday, August 16.
Birders looking for shorebirds this week should expect to see
increasing numbers
of Black-bellied Plovers, White-rumped and Pectoral sandpipers, and
small
numbers of Stilt Sandpipers and Long-billed Dowitchers in appropriate
standing
water environments. Birders are also encouraged to be on the lookout
for color-
banded shorebirds since the careful documentation of leg-banded
shorebirds is
of considerable value to shorebird researchers. For information on
what to do
if you see a color-banded shorebird, see
<http://www.bandedbirds.org/>http://www.bandedbirds.org/ In
addition to watching migratory shorebirds be on the lookout for
Common
Nighthawks migrating overhead during late afternoon and dusk. Also
it's
time to start watching for early migrating songbirds in coastal
thickets and
other appropriate areas.
A SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER that has been present at Sandy Point
State Park at the south end of Plum Island for nearly two weeks was
still present
as recently as Sunday. Other reports from Plum Island included a
YELLOW-
CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, 20 STILT SANDPIPERS, and a CASPIAN
TERN. A recent banding report from the Joppa Flats bird-banding
station
located at the Parker River Wildlife Refuge on Plum Island included a
SHARP-
SHINNED HAWK, a WOOD THRUSH, a BLUE-WINGED WARBLER, 14
YELLOW WARBLERS, 2 BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLERS, 10
AMERICAN REDSTARTS, an OVENBIRD, a MOURNING WARBLER,
24 COMMON YELLOWTHROATS, and 6 BALTIMORE ORIOLES.
Shorebirds tallied at South Beach in Chatham over the weekend
included 660
BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, 1000 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 25
AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS, 30 WILLETS as well as 15 of the Western
race, 10 WHIMBRELS, 1 HUDSONIAN GODWIT, 3 MARBLED GODWITS,
80 RUDDY TURNSTONES, 100 RED KNOTS, 800 SANDERLINGS,
1500 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS, as well as 400 ROSEATE TERNS
and 1600 COMMON TERNS.
A report from the Boston Fenway included a WARBLING VIREO, a BLUE-
GRAY GNATCATCHER, 15 YELLOW WARBLERS, an AMERICAN
REDSTART, 4 NORTHERN WATERTHRUSHES, and 3 COMMON
YELLOWTHROATS.
At Gooseberry Neck in Westport there were 3 RUBY-THROATED
HUMMINGBIRDS, 2 unidentified Empidonax flycatchers, and 4000
TREE SWALLOWS, and at Horeseneck Beach in Westport a MARBLED
GODWIT was observed.
At the Cambridge Reservoir in Waltham there was a SNOWY EGRET,
a BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK,
6 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, a SOLITARY SANDPIPER, a LESSER
YELLOWLEGS, and 30 LEAST SANDPIPERS.
Miscellaneous reports included a BAIRD'S SANDPIPER at North Beach
