EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS
This is the Voice of Audubon for Friday, August 20.
Birders looking for shorebirds over the weekend should start looking
for some of the
less common and late-arriving species such as American Golden-Plover,
Western
Sandpiper, Baird's Sandpiper, and Buff-breasted Sandpiper. In
addition to
migratory shorebirds be on the lookout for Common Nighthawks
migrating
overhead during late afternoon and dusk. Especially try to pick an
elevated spot
with good visibility of the northern horizon. Also it's time to
start watching for
early migrating songbirds in coastal thickets and other appropriate
brushy areas.
An unconfirmed report of a possible SPOTTED REDSHANK in non-breeding
plumage was received yesterday from the salt panes at Parker River
Refuge on
Plum Island. Unfortunately a search today failed to produce any sign
of the bird.
At Sandy Point State Park at the south end of Plum Island a
SCISSOR-TAILED
FLYCATCHER present for over two weeks now continues to be seen, and
other
reports from Plum Island this week included a YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-
HERON, 2 MERLINS, 2 PEREGRINE FALCONS, 50 WHITE-RUMPED
SANDPIPERS, several STILT SANDPIPERS, and a BLACK TERN.
At Belle Isle in East Boston there was a BLUE-WINGED TEAL, a
PEREGRINE
FALCON, a SORA, and an UPLAND SANDPIPER.
Reported from the Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge in Concord
were
a GREAT EGRET, 4 GREEN HERONS, 4 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-
HERONS, a BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER, and 3 BOBOLINKS.
At Great Pond in Randolph observations included a PIED-BILLED GREBE,
a
BLACK VULTURE, and a CASPIAN TERN, and at Squantum a WILSON'S
PHALAROPE was observed in the salt panes near the marsh off East
Squantum Street.
At Horseneck Beach in Westport there were 18 WILLETS, 15 WHIMBRELS,
and a MARBLED GODWIT.
Reports from Nantucket included 29 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER, 9
SOLITARY SANDPIPERS, 6 WHIMBRELS, 18 BLACK TERNS, 140
ROSEATE TERNS, 2 FORSTER'S TERNS, and 60 LAUGHING GULLS.
A whale watching trip out of Gloucester produced 30 GREAT SHEAR-
WATERS, a SOOTY SHEARWATER, a MANX SHEARWATER, 10
NORTHERN GANNETS, 12 BLACK TERNS, and 300 COMMON TERNS.
In Pembroke there were 8 GREAT EGRETS, an AMERICAN GOLDEN-
PLOVER, 4 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, and a LAUGHING GULL, and
at the Burrage Pond Wildlife Management Area in Hanson there were 40
WOOD DUCKS, a BLUE-WINGED TEAL, 16 GREAT EGRETS, 6 GLOSSY
IBISES, and a PEREGRINE FALCON.
A banding report from Wing Island in Brewster included a BLUE-WINGED
WARBLER, a NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, an AMERICAN
REDSTART, and a MOURNING WARBLER.
Miscellaneous reports included 12 GREAT EGRETS in Lowell, 9
YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS at Hemenway Landing in
Eastham, 2 WESTERN SANDPIPERS at the Scituate Reservoir in
Scituate, and 3 COMMON RAVENS in Brockton.
