EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS

This is the Voice of Audubon for Friday, August 27.

As a result of the three-day Nor'easter this week, birders were
treated to some
unusual inland occurrences of waterbird species knocked down by the
heavy
rains and high winds associated with the storm. Among the species
affected
were BONAPARTE'S and LAUGHING GULLS, and BLACK, COMMON, and
FORSTER'S TERNS. Also, last night's light cold front generated the
first
notable movement of migrating warblers and other songbirds, so be
sure to
check coastal thickets for migrants over the weekend. This is also
the time to
keep an eye out for COMMON NIGHTHAWKS migrating overhead during
late afternoon and dusk. Try to pick an elevated spot with good
visibility of
the northern horizon.

A GULL-BILLED TERN was observed at South Beach in Chatham on
Thursday, and other South Beach reports included 500 BLACK-BELLIED
and 300 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 19 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS,
10 WHIMBRELS, 50 WILLETS, 29 HUDSONIAN and 2 MARBLED
GODWITS, 50 RUDDY TURNSTONES, 250 RED KNOTS, 300
SANDERLINGS, 50 WHITE-RUMPED, 300 SEMIPALMATED, 2
WESTERN, and 100 LEAST SANDPIPERS, 2 DUNLIN, 300 SHORT-
BILLED DOWITCHERS, 3 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS, 230
ROSEATE TERNS, and 3 FORSTER'S TERNS.

Reports from Nantucket this week included a BALD EAGLE, 6 SOLITARY
SANDPIPERS, a BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, 3 STILT SANDPIPERS, a
BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER, 2 LESSER BLACK-BACKED
GULLS, a CASPIAN TERN, a HOODED WARBLER, and a LARK
SPARROW.

At Great Pond in Randolph recent observations included 5 BLUE-WINGED
TEAL, a PIED-BILLED GREBE, 2 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS, a
LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER, a LAUGHING GULL, and 2 FORSTER'S
TERNS.

A sea watch at Race Point in Provincetown on Tuesday produced 20
CORY'S SHEARWATERS, 570 GREATER SHEARWATERS, 7 SOOTY
SHEARWATERS, 60 MANX SHEARWATERS, 80 WILSON'S STORM-
PETRELS, 12 LEACH'S STORM-PETRELS, 58 NORTHERN GANNETS,
15 unidentified phalaropes, and a probable SOUTH POLAR SKUA. A
similar effort at Corporation Beach in Dennis tallied 3 BLACK-LEGGED
KITTIWAKES, 6 BLACK TERNS, 2 FORSTER'S TERNS, a PARASITIC
JAEGER, and 5 unidentified jaegers.

Observed at the Cumberland Farms fields in the Halifax/Middleboro
area
this week were 14 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, 6 SEMIPALMATED
PLOVERS, 60 KILLDEER, 9 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 3 SOLITARY
SANDPIPERS, 3 UPLAND SANDPIPERS, a WHIMBREL, a BAIRD'S
SANDPIPER, a PECTORAL SANDPIPER, 2 BUFF-BREASTED SAND-
PIPERS, a WILSON'S PHALAROPE, a BONAPARTE'S GULL, and
21 LAUGHING GULLS.

Warblers noted at Dunback Meadow in Lexington today included
GOLDEN-WINGED, NASHVILLE, NORTHERN PARULA, YELLOW,
CHESTNUT-SIDED, BLACK-THROATED BLUE, BLACK-THROATED
GREEN, PRAIRIE, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, and WILSON'S.

Miscellaneous reports included 6 YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-
HERONS at Hemenway Landing in Eastham; 56 KILLDEER in Belmont;
5 BLACK TERNS in Waltham and singles in West Roxbury, Stoughton,
and Pembroke; a LONG-TAILED JAEGER at Manomet Point; 195
COMMON NIGHTHAWKS in Watertown; a NORTHERN WATER-
THRUSH, and single WILSON'S and CANADA WARBLERS at the
Boston Fenway; and a HOODED WARBLER in East Orleans.
