WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS
This is the Western Voice of Audubon for Monday,
March 24, 2008
A BARNACLE GOOSE was seen Saturday and early Sunday
in the large flocks of geese assembled on the
Hadley/Amherst line off Russellville and Meadow
Roads. Also in this area at various times over the
week were up to 130 SNOW GEESE, a CACKLING GOOSE, 2
WHITE-FRONTED GEESE, a NORTHERN HARRIER, a MERLIN, 62
KILLDEER, and 45 AMERICAN PIPITS.
Two TUNDRA SWANS have been seen off and along West
Road in Longmeadow. Also found there and along
Pondside Road were 29 WOOD DUCKS. 30 NORTHERN
PINTAILS, 24 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 2 GADWALLS, a
CANVASBACK, an AMERICAN COOT, 3 FISH CROWS, and 7
AMERICAN WOODCOCKS.
Seen in the meadows of Northampton were 22 GADWALLS,
18 NORTHERN PINTAILS, 6 AMERICAN WIGEONS, 2 BLUE-
WINGED TEAL, 24 RING-NECKED DUCKS, 3 CANVASBACKS, a
BUFFLEHEAD, and 110 COMMON MERGANSERS. Two FISH CROWS
were heard at the Stop & Shop.
In the Turners Falls area there were 2 GREATER WHITE-
FRONTED GEESE, 2 GADWALLS, 2 AMERICAN WIGEONS, 8
NORTHERN PINTAILS, 37 RING-NECKED DUCKS, 6
CANVASBACKS, 14 COMMON GOLDENEYES, 6 BUFFLEHEADS, an
ICELAND GULL, a GLAUCOUS GULL, and a LESSER BLACK-
BACKED GULL.
A SANDHILL CRANE was seen over Sheffield, and in
Ashley Falls there were 5 TUNDRA SWANS.
BLACK VULTURES were observed in Westfield, Great
Barrington, and Williamstown.
Two BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were seen in Athol and 10 were
in Ashfield, while 20 COMMON REDPOLLS were found in
Shutesbury. Six PINE GROSBEAKS were in Amherst and 3
in Pittsfield. Three PURPLE FINCHES were also found
in Amherst.
Seen in Hatfield were 4 NORTHERN PINTAILS, and a
GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE, and in Deerfield there
were 2 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE, 6 NORTHERN
PINTAILS, and 24 WOOD DUCKS.
In Westhampton a NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL was heard
calling and a NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen.
