WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS
This is the Western Voice of Audubon for Monday April
13, 2008
A EURASIAN GREEN-WINGED TEAL was found at Great Pond
in Hatfield. This is still a sub-species of the
GREEN-WINGED TEAL, of which there were 85 on the pond
along with a NORTHERN SHOVELER, a VESPER SPARROW, and
5 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS.
A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER and a FISH CROW were seen in
Florence, 2 BLUE-WINGED TEAL, a BARROW’S GOLDENEYE
and 2 ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS were in Athol, 3
SANDHILL CRANES and a GREAT EGRET were in Warren, and
a NORTHERN SHRIKE, a WILSON’S SNIPE, and 2 RUSTY
BLACKBIRDS were reported in Northfield.
Seen in Hadley were 213 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, an
AMERICAN WIGEON, 8 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 4 LESSER
YELLOWLEGS, a flock of 100 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS, and 6
WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS.
At Ashley Ponds in Holyoke there were 3 HORNED
GREBES, a BONAPARTE’S GULL, a NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED
WALLOW, a BARN SWALLOW, and a LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH.
Two BLACK VULTURES were seem in Easthampton, a BLUE-
WINGED TEAL was in Chicopee, 2 COMMON LOONS, a PIED-
BILLED GREBE, and 6 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were seen in
Southwick, and a WINTER WREN and a BOHEMIAN WAXWING
were in Belchertown.
In Amherst there were 2 SNOW GEESE, a BROWN THRASHER,
and 4 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, 2 NORTHERN GOSHAWKS were
at Mt Tom, a LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH was in Granville,
and a COMMON LOON, a GREAT EGRET, and a WINTER WREN
were at Quabbin Park.
A COMMON LOON, a HORNED GREBE, and a BONAPARTE’S GULL
were at Pontoosuc Reservoir, a GREATER SCAUP, a
NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW, and a PIED-BILLED
GREBE were at Cheshire Reservoir, a LOUISIANA
WATERTHRUSH and a VESPER SPARROW were in Lenox, a
FISH CROW was in Lee, and 5 COMMON LOONS and a
BONAPARTE’S GULL were on Lake Onota.
A tour of Petersham and New Salem produced a NORTHERN
GOSHAWK, 2 WILSON’S SNIPE, 9 BARRED OWLS, 9 NORTHERN
SAW-WHET OWLS, a BLUE-HEADED VIREO, 3 WINTER
WRENS, and 2 EVENING GROSBEAKS.
Counted migrating over Barre Falls during one day
were 33 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 64 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS,
and 12 AMERICAN KESTRELS.
