WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS
This is the Western Voice of Audubon for Monday
April 20, 2008.
There were three reports of SANDHILL CRANES: a
single bird in Richmond, another in Hawley, and
one that after several days was joined by a
second bird today on Bass Road in the town of
Warwick.
Also seen in Hawley were a NORTHERN GOSHAWK, 3
BARN SWALLOWS, and 10 EVENING GROSBEAKS, while
an AMERICAN BITTERN was found in Warwick.
At Turners Falls there were 72 RING-NECKED
DUCKS, 2 BUFFLEHEADS, 12 LESSER SCAUP, 100
COMMON MERGANSERS, and a GLAUCOUS GULL.
Noted in Amherst were a LESSER YELLOWLEGS, a
BARN SWALLOW, a BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER, 3
EASTERN MEADOWLARKS, and a PINE SISKIN.
Two BROWN THRASHERS, a VESPER SPARROW, and a
WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW were in Northampton, and
an AMERICAN BITTERN, 3 BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHERS
and a BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER were seen in
Belchertown.
Observed in Hadley were 45 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 8
GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 3 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 11
WILSON’S SNIPE, a GLAUCOUS GULL, 2 FISH CROWS
and 3 VESPER SPARROWS.
A BOHEMIAN WAXWING was seen in Shelburne, a
PIED-BILLED GREBE in Cheshire, a BROWN THRASHER
in Hinsdale, and a PINE SISKIN and FISH CROW in
Pittsfield.
A very early RED-EYED VIREO was reported from
Ashfield, a BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER was seen in
Great Barrington, and 10 LESSER SCAUP were in
Monterey.
Another very early report was of a NORTHERN
PARULA in Granby, while at Quabbin Park there
were 2 BUFFLEHEADS, 3 COMMON LOONS, and 15
RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS.
Two BLUE-WINGED TEAL and 3 BLUE-GRAY
GNATCATCHERS were in Longmeadow and a FISH CROW
and a PINE SISKIN were seen in Southwick.
